There is no such thing as "average extracurricular". Some schools favor one type of thing more than another. We need more detail about your extracurriculars so we can better advise you. Your state of residence will also help. And lastly, 7 schools isn't enough.

State of Residence is VA.
I've seen AA males with your stats told to apply to every school in the country (meaning even the top schools). Somebody may correct me, but I would at least search around on the forum and see what similar stats URM applicants have been told. Definitely add your state schools.

Unfortunately I don't see you having a good chance at UCLA. They highly value research and, for admissions purposes, your research during the gap year won't count since the admissions committee will see it has a planned rather than completed activity. However, if you get a publication and you update them about this within reasonable time then it might help. Some thing for Baylor, except you aren't from Texas so it will be extremely difficult. and UNC has an instate bias the last time I checked. The rest of your schools are pretty ok, but not enough.

Interesting. I will.

Thanks for the insight!

Disagree. I think you can literally apply to any school you want and have a very good shot, especially at the top schools. I hope you intend to add more schools that list but I will let goro/gyngyn/gonnif/LizzyM help you with that part.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll look into that.

Add all your state schools-EVMS, U Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech.

List:
UCLA
Baylor
Temple
Howard
Meharry
Morehouse
U Miami
UNC
EVMS, U Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
Virginia Tech
Harvard ?
Yale?
Stanford?
Johns Hop
Columbia
Georgetown
Cornell
Northwestern
U of Chicago
Ohio State

Too top heavy?

@thatprmed Overall, your personal case is kind of odd. On one hand, your high stats and URM status are highly desirable by top schools. However, your lack of research and lack of substantial community service might be a turn off for top schools as well. I think you need a solid base of mid-tier schools (Tufts, Drexel, Emory, BU etc). I think @gyngyn, @Goro, and @LizzyM can provide you with a lot of insight on this.

I don't think your lack of research will be much of a factor. Find a project now, put it on the app as going through the gap year (just so you wont be a "no research applicant" on their stats. All your ? marks are fine and you can add Penn and WashU or wherever else.

Definitely would disregard what was said about UCLA. They have a very holistic admissions process. Not worth discounting based on a lack of current research. Please take the advice of users encouraging you to shoot for the stars with this app cycle. Obviously it shouldn't be only top schools, but I wouldn't discount many schools for you either. Good luck!! Adcoms will hopefully add on and give their opinions as well. Just didn't want to see you needlessly toss out UCLA.

What if I binge on volunteering in June and apply July? Would that be smart or silly since longevity of service is an important factor ?
