Hey guys!

How did you prepare for the reading comprehension section? Are there any books/programs that would help? And how does the MCAT, SAT, etc. reading comprehension compare to the DAT reading comprehension?

Thanks! 😛

if you can master mcat verbal, dat rc will be a joke. on my dat, i had a passage with questions very similar to mcat verbal (tone + inference). nonetheless, dat rc passages are way easier to read and understand.

to prepare, just practice using topscore or achiever tests and if you're scoring 20+ on these, you should be fine.

DAT RC is by far much easier than MCAT VR. To practice use practice tests, read newspaper articles, and science magazines. The practice tests will help you to become familiar with the testing format. Articles and magazines should help with speed reading. I was getting 16/17 on Achiever and the highest I scored on Topscore was a 21. On the real DAT I got a 23. The tone/inference questions are very basic, especially if your going to compare it to MCAT.

Is the format of the reading comprehension for Topscore and Achiever similar to that of the real test (like the highlighting option, etc.)?

Thanks for your advice, btw!

I can only speak for Topscore but yes, format is similar.

The question + answer choices take the top half of the screen and the passage fills the bottom half. Paragraphs are numbered. There is NO highlight function (don't think topscore had this either).

Sorry to hijack...but TopScore seems to be mainly factual, I haven't seen any tone/inference questions on it. I just scored a 25 on TopScore 2's RC and could've done better, but I'm worried about the tone/inference questions, whats a good source for those, Kaplan?

I just bought Crack DAT Reading... From what I heard, that is more geared toward tone/inference questions. I took the first test (got a 21) and it definitely had more tone/inference than a practice one that I took from Kaplan, which was mostly factual.

The passages are really not hard at all.
You basically need to read fast and get a general grip on where the information are located.
I didn't prepare for the reading section at all and I got a 21 on the actual DAT.
All I do everyday is read New York Times for an hour, and read some scientific journal on your spare time.
My first language is not English, and just by reading NYT and journals can really help you prepare for the reading section.
