I'm a Physical Therapist with H1 visa. I'm actually thinking to go back to school and apply to DO school. My question is that Is it a good idea to go back and do DO?? Do I need any kind of bachelor degree since I'm a PT? Should I just take MCAT and apply to DO school or Should I have to go back to school to finish some science credits? ..I'm trying to make an appointment with counselor but they are too busy ..so I"m just posting it here to get some friendly reply.

I would really appreciate if you share your knowledge about this field here. Thanks!

Hi Agent47. Going back to D.O. school is a good idea if you know for sure you would rather practice as a physician than a therapist. Actually, having a PT background makes a lot of sense, since you can build off your existing knowledge base and experience. Most D.O. programs require a set number of undergrad hours for admission and most applicants already hold a bachelors's or advanced degree before matriculating. You will definitely need at least the premedical prerequisites before any school will accept you, and I would highly recommend not taking the MCAT until after taking them since D.O. applicant numbers (gpa, MCAT) continue to rise each year. Here is a website that will answer a lot of your questions: www.aacom.org. I am a MPT that is starting D.O. school in a couple of weeks. :luck:

If you feel like you want to be a physician go for it. There are many post-back students in many of the DO schools so you shouldn't worry you will be in good company. You will need to get a BA or BS. You will have to check with schools to make sure they accept your course work if you took it some time ago. You will need to take Bio I and II, Chem. I and II, Organic Chem. I and II, and Physics I and II. I would say take your MCAT when you are ready for it. Take a few months and study. It is currently given on computer and you can take it whenever you want. Even check on this site there is a whole post-back community. Talk to some of them and get advice on what they did. I hope you are accepted to the school of your choice. Good Luck!!!:luck::luck::luck:

Do you plan on practicing medicine in the United States? Will a DO degree be recognized wherever you intend to practice?

1. finish your pre-reqs (school specific in some cases - check AACOMAS)
2. take the MCAT (Study like crazy)
3. apply (tedious)
4. go to medical school (be overjoyed...and then suffer)

good luck!
