Want to watch a foal being born?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow that is one pregnant mare!! I wish she'd move her butt a little more to the right. Just in case she gives birth in the next 3 minutes.

Exactly my thoughts.

And yet another thing to keep me distracted from studying.

Many thanks!😀

Screw you Microbiology Final...babies are being born! I can TOTALLY do flashcards and watch this at the same time...On another note -
YAY FOALING SEASON! Let's hope this foal comes out safe and wobbly :xf:

YouTube for instant gratification.

I just came back from the lab and was hoping to see a wobbly foal.

:C <- disappointed face.

Also, the camera connection is getting fuzzy.

Big as a house!

I keep hoping something will happen. She's acting a lot like our mare when she gave birth. Sort of restlessly pacing around, sniffing around the ground.

I was talking to her owner and apparently the connection gets fuzzy when she turns on her wireless in the barn 🙁 But she's out there all day, so she wants the internet.

I hope she pops tonight when I get back from the vet!

Youtube isn't as gratifying as MareStare 😀

she is looking uncomfortable looking at her sides and kicking out...hard to tell with the fuzziness though :/

Parturition Stage I for a Mare: 1 - 4 hours 🙁

Though she does seem a bit restless, and needs to move back to the position she just had a little while ago because it was perfect.

Dear mare, please wait for me to finish my final before you pop. Much appriceated.

I thought she was getting restless.... but it was feed time. 🙁

Forgive my lack of equine knowledge . . . she just lied down. Is that how they give birth or is she just really tired?

Edit: Youtube just answered my question. 😛

Edit #2: And back down . . . rolling on her back. O.O

Edit #3: She keeps going down and looking back. She knows she's almost there! 😀

I think she's getting close. She's been down twice and rolled once.

Horses give birth lying down, generally.

I wonder why they haven't exchanged the shavings in her stall for straw?

Her water broke around 5 minutes ago. You can see the puddle in the lower left corner.

If so, it means she's progressed to stage 2 labor! If all things are going smoothly, she should have a little one in the next 30 minutes or so!

I wondered the same thing. I thought straw was pretty much standard practice.

It is. Not good for the little one's new respiratory system to be born on shavings. Not to mention the huge sticky mess all over the foal attracting all the shavings, plus you need to pull the placenta out of the stall and examine it to make sure it's intact, lest a piece was left in the mare and you need to flush her out. Kind of hard with four gazillion shavings stuck to it.

Also, her tail isn't wrapped. 1.) Ew. 2.) I can't see. lol

Edit: And as I speak, someone walks in there to wrap her tail.

Part of the embryonic sack is already out!!! They just wrapped her tail. 😀

Gahhhh pull DOWN towards the hocks, not straight out! *cringe*

It's out!!!!! 😀

It got stuck on the way out and both the vet and the owner had to help the mom by pulling. All 3 of them (including the mom) are cleaning the foul as I type this.

I'll upload and link the screenshots I took in a bit. =3

She stood up and broke the cord! Little one is its own horse now 😍

Let mama have a go at licking the baby! Jeez! So much hubub going on

He (or she) is out!

Super cute 🙂

My thoughts exactly! She carried it for 11 months, she knows what she's doing, she doesn't need people all over her baby.

ETA: Ah, there we go. Looks like they just put down straw and moved the foal. Now mom and baby are meeting and starting to bond.

They're leaving her alone now. They had to disinfect the ubilical stump and possibly clean the gook out of its nose.

Soooo gross, yet soooo cute and cool!!

I know, Just not a fan of it going on *right away*. It can wait an hour in my opinion.

Eh, the foal's going to be around people a lot longer than it's going to be with mom. Different strokes for different folks 😉

IT JUST HAPPENED! AND I WATCHED IT! YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!😍

Haha this is my favorite part, when they're trying to get up. The triumph on their little faces when they finally do it is priceless!

awww, poor little guy/girl fell down! i'm so pissed I was at work during this whole thing

Gaaahhhhhh She had it! Dammmiiiiiit I wanted to see! I just checked like 2 hours ago. Poop. 🙁

I knew I was going to regret that dairy queen.
