Hi everyone,

I was just accepted into a summer program at the Washington University in St. Louis. Here is a link to the program: http://publichealth.wustl.edu/degrees/Pages/Summer-Research-Program.aspx

I am completely new to the world of public health so I was hoping for some advice about
a) The reputation of WUSL
b) How a program like this would look on a resume for the specific type of work I want to go into

Eventually I hope to get an MPH, and I want to go into policy work. I'd like to work for a patient safety or quality improvement organization. I enjoy performing secondary research (like literature reviews and that sort of thing) far more than primary research. I especially enjoy advocacy work and translating academic papers into fact sheets and that sort of thing so that regular folks can understand research findings. I'm also very interested / dedicated to researching health inequity and solutions.

Based on that information, do you think that this program is a good fit for me? Something that will matter to future employers and/or get me into grad school? Thanks so much!

Washington University is a top research university and has an outstanding reputation for health professions in general. I think this would be a good experience for you and will definitely be an asset on MPH apps. I will say that MPH programs, even at top schools, are a lot less competitive than I thought they would be. But it looks like this actually has a stipend so it sounds like a really great opportunity.

That seems like a great program. As KPZ said, MPH programs aren't incredibly competitive (although they can be pretty competitive at some of the smaller, higher ranked programs), not only would something like this be a good app booster, but it would look good on a resume. Based on the brief reading I did of the program, it seems like you'd gain practical experience that you could utilize whether you go for an MPH right away or go into the workforce.

Thanks everyone! I decided to accept my position in the program and am so excited to start!
