WashU decision dates, adcom meetings

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Kardiackiel, so should we address all of our updates - such as our LOI, additional LORs, and other things - directly to Dr. Dodson (would this be too much mail for him?) or should we send it to the office?

I mean, if the admissions staff are going to put the stuff into our files, then isn't there a chance Dean Dodson will not read them?

Or does it work such that, if we are being considered for being taken off the waitlist he will re-look at everything in our file?

When I was waitlisted last year, I was told by my advisor (who is also on the committee/used to have Dr. Dodson's position), to address everything to Dr. Dodson.

If we call in can we get our application status (i.e. if we have been reviewed yet)?

From what another poster said, they will most likely won't tell you anything specific. Just that, everyone will be notified by a certain date.

That sounds about right.

yeah, they'll tell you if a decision has been made and that you can expect to hear something mid-april at this point.

i've gotten to the point where i have the wash u admissions office number saved as a contact on my cell. i also call them casually sometimes just to check up. i was at california pizza kitchen the other day w/ my mom and i got the urge, so i called and that's when i found out about that april part 😉

hey kardiackiel - sorry to keep asking you stuff (lol), but do you know if they will be meeting again one last time? well, likely not since you already said dodson made that comment about the waitlisted applicant...nevermind

i did a search on last year wash u thread.
If wash u goes by last year's schedule, this week is the last week they send out acceptances.

so ur sayin they are meeting on the 15th and that's it eh?

I know this must be addressed somewhere on the thread but my brain (and my internet connection) is just not up to rifting through posts right now. So...

Since the last date for acceptance is coming up, how have people found out about their predicament? Email from school, email from interviewers, good old fashioned letter, phone call?

Well - I know that if you are worried about receiving the letter, not to worry b/c you'll receive the email inviting you to 2nd look...that's our version of the "harvard loophole" i suppose.

My boss did some digging for me, and apparently I'm wait-listed, but he doesn't know much more beyond that.

Hey KardiacKiehl, did you interview durring the icestorm at the end of November?

Well - I don't really know if there will be one last meeting today or not, but if there is, I suspect there will be very few offers left to give, since our good friend kardiackiel has said that he has already been put on the waiting list. Whatever happens from tomorrow on, I just wanted to say good luck to everyone waiting.

I concur. Good luck everyone and don't give up hope if you're put on the waiting list. When do you guys think we will find out? I hope soon so I can have the agony of getting all these rejections compressed to a week or so.

Here's question - is a one page LOI too long?

Here's question - is a one page LOI too long?

As long as you have something substantial to say, I don't think 1 pg is too bad.

Also I wonder if you should stress the fact that you are willing to pull up that escrow account. I know plenty of Canadian students who have ditched WashU in the past because of that escrow requirement. They might look upon you more favourable if you promised to do everything in your power to get that account in place?

But then, I'm just a lowly premed so what do I know anyways.

Anyone hear anything today? The committee met, so just wondering if anyone got a call/invite to revisit weekend etc?

Oh no! You are far from being a lowly premed, your mdapps profile is a testament to that! I'd say you are the cream of the crop! I'm only asking b/c I asked one of my pros - who will be writing the additional letter of support if i get waitlisted - to look at my draft and they said it was too long. It was about 1 page single spaced...

I suggest that you print this entire thread and mail it to Dean Dodson. It is a testament to your devotion and will definitely speak louder than any LOI!

OK, just kidding. Can you fit in into a page with the letterheads and nice spacing? If yes I wouldn't bother with it...

anyone heard anything yet??

😱

nadda! not even the email invitation for 2nd look...damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, huddle around - we need to figure out if they will actually send out rejections or if everyone gets w-listed. Then we gotta figure out if there are two pools and if so, how to tell the difference. Then we gotta figure out what is the best strategy for convincing dean dodson to take us off the w-list!

let's hear it...

Sorry if I missed this in the preceding posts, but is it confirmed that the regular acceptances have been completely exhausted? I interviewed in mid-Feb. and was told that our decisions wouldn't be complete until April 15th. If all the acceptances have been made, would it really take a full month for them to send the decisions out? Or is the remaining month to determine who is waitlisted vs. rejected?

You guys are definitely more on-the-ball about this stuff. Can anyone clarify?

Hey guys, I'm a fourth year med student here at Wash U. Just writing so that you guys keep the hope alive!
I too interviewed late there (very last week), and was told straight out that anyone getting in at that point would do so via waitlist. That being said, at least four years ago, Wash U is very good about taking people off the waitlist.

As far as sending crap in, I will say that Wash U was the only school I never sent any additional stuff after I interviewed (I just got lazy at that point-didn't even email). Now, take that to mean what you will, but I hope you guys don't stress out too much about getting extra letters and stuff in. Not to say that it won't help you, but just know that it's not a competition of who can make their file the thickest.

Good luck to all of you.

and now his lazy ass just matched into an awesome position for residency... 😀

i know the waiting game sucks and all you want is someone to tell you the future. but seriously if you do or don't get in here, you'll still go to med school and you'll all be working hard and studying hard and in the end you come out well trained no matter where you go. most of us will only know what it's like to go to one med school and we all made the best of it wherever we were.

good luck and feel free to let me know if you have any questions about wash u (from the student's perspective - i have no insider info from the admin office).

Just got a snail mail rejection, socal applicant with about average scores for washu. interviewed in mid-january. best of luck to you all.

Anyone else who hasn't heard back from WashU yet heard anything? Alternatively, has the RSVP date for second-look weekend passed yet?

RSVP until Friday the 23rd (the weekend isn't until April 13). What I like is that this is actually a WEEKEND, rather than eating a Thursday in travel and a Friday in activities. Housing is provided for Friday and Saturday night; travel expenses are not.

Any mail today?

Yea, I officially got my thrive-waitlist letter today. It's funny ... the wording is EXACTLY (word for word) the same as last year ... lots of good it did me then. I'm not counting on Wash U this time around. To save you all the paranoia, it says that they expect to admit at least an additional 50 candidates off the wait list this year. This is about right as, 40% of the class usually does come in off the waitlist. However, the waitlist is GINORMOUS, so take that number with a grain of salt.

That sucks dude, I called this morning and they said I was waitlisted. However, they wouldn't tell me if I was in the upper third or whatever. Can you give me some keywords I should be watching out for when I get the letter to know if it's in the thriving or other categories?
BTW, how many people approximately remain on the waitlist?

Do you know how many people are on the thrive waitlist and how many are on the lower waitlist?

I don't know how many people will remain on the waitlist and I don't think I'll be able to find out (you should have seen how cryptic Dr. Dodson's response was to my boss' e-mail concerning my application ... and the two of them are friends and he knows me ... I think they try and limit the subjectivity as much as they can). Regarding the top 1/3 (which I got again this year), it will be pretty obvious. The key word is "thrive," but the letter also reads like an acceptance. It reads along the lines of (since I don't have it in front of me):

The committee has finished its evaluation of your application and judged that you would be a good fit for our incoming class. However, at the current time we have more qualified applicants than spots. However, we believe that you will thrive at Wash U and hope that you will remain on our waitlist, blah blah blah.

Also, sorry to hear about the waitlist. It's always depressing. Here's hoping someone gets an acceptance soon from Wash U, even at the expense of one less spot for me down the road, because I'd like to see this thread amount to something positive for at least one of the people frequenting it often (xylem29 would be nice).

I think its 1/3 thrive and 2/3 lower ... and the wording is WAY different. The tone on the lower makes it really sound like a rejection, which I think that it definitely is ... a delayed rejection.

How do we know that there are two waitlists? And how do we know that each waitlist got different letters?

My waitlist letter that I got today says,
Your application for admission to our 2007 First Year Class has been carefully evaluated by the members of our COM who have determined that you are qualified for admission. However, at this time we have more outstanding applicants than available positions.

Then the paragraph about the 50 acceptances and FinAid.

Then, I hope that you will remain under consideration because I believe you would thrive here."

IS THIS THE SAME LETTER THAT YOU ALL GOT? IS THIS THE "THRIVE" OR "DELAYED REJECTION" LETTER?

Thanks for your input

I just called in too - they told me that no decision has been made, but I should receive a letter by april 15.....i wonder if the two tiers of waitlist letters are sent out at different times with the "thrive" letter being sent out first (meaning I'm on the "bad" one)???

I'm pretty sure that there are no more acceptances by now right? I mean, you're all getting waitlisted already...maybe they're still on the fence as to whether I should be "thrive" waitlisted or not??? Anyway, I too wish to see at least one of us get some good news........................

since thrive is the keyword, I'd say you got the thrive letter.
Alright so if 50 people get off the waitlist, and 1/3 the waitlist is thrive, then if the waitlist is say 600, 200 is the thrive part and 50 get in. That's not too bad a deal, but the waiting will kill me this time.

That is the thrive letter. I only know because this was discussed at length in last year's Wash U waitlist thread when it became blatantly obvious that there were two different letters. Talking to my boss, there definitely are two pools, top 1/3 and everyone else, but it is NOT ranked. I'd be careful thinking that THRIVE does not = delayed rejection, because numerically, it probably still will. But it does still give you a chance and I wish you good luck. Someone here (probably multiple) will eventually get off that list with that letter. I just don't think it'll be me and I'm fine with that.

1) Wash U's secretaries are generally good about not giving much information. I'm surprised others were able to find out they were waitlisted by calling. I bet a decision has been made on you and they just want you to wait and receive it in the mail.
2) I don't know whether the different waitlist pool letters are sent out at different times, but I doubt it (can't see why).
3) I doubt there are any more acceptances to give (no more committee meetings scheduled at least)

Did you send updates last year and a LOI?
Don't give up hope, it's difficult but have some faith.
And Xylem, sorry to hear you didn't get in.

I never sent a LOI, but I definitely sent plenty of updates. And I'm not giving up hope, I'm just being more realistic this time around (last year I got duped by how positive the letter sounded).

Hey guys, I just called the office and got the same "no decision has been made, but you will receive a letter by april 15th"
argh...the wait...

I think they told hednej b/c he's a "regular" 🙂

Something like that ... I wouldn't draw any conclusions on your status based on the secretaries ... that's my only point.

Sorry to hear that xylem, I'm wishing very, very hard for you to get on that thrive list and be pulled off it in May.
