Hi ahumdinger, it has been so great to read your informative posts! I wish I could get some good news from WashU. Do they send out rejection for people on the waitlist? Or you just figure it out if you don't receive anything from them after the school starts?
ahumdinger, I will be traveling in China between May 18 and Jun 15. Where will you be? Maybe we can meet overthere!
 
I spoke to my pal the secretary at the admissions office. I tried to probe for the same info I always ask. I figured that now she's had time to process all the waitlist reply forms (to say that you want to remain on the list) she might have an idea of how many people are on it. I got nada. I think she could tell I was trying to turn on the charm. She said that she really doesn't know because she doesn't even count them. She makes a point not to because she thinks it's better that she doesn't know. I guess after all these years of processing applications, you just get sick of it and don't want to invest too much emotion into it. This way she can honestly tell every applicant that she doesn't know! So again she gave me the same vague info: "I can tell you it's more than 100" to which I replied, "okay, so is it under 200?" and her response was "I don't know."

ah, the games we play, the secretary and I!! As much as I ask the same questions, she tells me the same old stuff, such as
"keep us updated"
"the list really is unranked"
"they can take anyone, from anywhere"

and my personal favorite:

"It's a long summer, I don't remember the last time we didn't accept someone in august."

Great! so the wait goes on! And when I matriculate at Mizzou come august 1, I can go with the satisfying knowlege that I may have been "the one" on August 2!


sorry for the disappointing response. I really believe that she doesn't know much of the details.

pico-- my itinerary is mostly in the northeast. Arrival in Beijing (not staying there), and then a stint in Dalian, then most of the trip will probably be in Harbin and Mudanjiang (my cousin's getting married). I have a good friend in Xian who I might visit. Where are you going to be?

Thanks ahumdinger! Just wondering why you think the waitlist number is in the 100-200 range (or was that just your cagey way of trying to get some more info)? I think you told us they accepted 226 people already out of 1000 or so that they interview. It doesn't seem like many, if any, people are rejected post interview, so I would guess 800ish people are offered the waitlist and more than half of those choose to remain on it. Still, with 50-100 people coming off of the waitlist (last year 336 were accepted, according to US News), there is reasonable hope...

Well I've been trying to get a rough estimate from her, and she says that people do get rejected post interview (we probably just don't see them on SDN), but the response was so vague that I said, "oh come on, can't you give me an idea as to the order of magnitude? Like are we talking 100 or several hundred?" That's when she said, "well I can tell you it's more than 100" and I cheekily followed up with, "okay, so it's it under 200?" But I guess that was her limit, she wouldn't tell me anything more. you are probably right though, a lot of people probably got the waitlist letter, but many also choose not to stay on the list...and I don't blame them, I'd like to avoid some undue stress myself!

I think that shortly after may 15, another letter is sent out that basically asks if you still want to be under consideration. I guess the idea is that after may 15, some students may have gotten into a good enough top choice and would rather not wait on WashU. At that point the list probably gets pared down quite a bit, and I can try to ask again then. (well maybe in june, since I will be out of town)

oops pico I didn't see your reply until just now (my thread subscription messed up). Ah it seems like we will pass each other like ships in the night (or bicycles through a crowded street?), but I hope you have a blast on your trip! And here's to good news for everyone soon!!! :luck:
 
Has anyone been doing anything beyond sending emails to the generic admissions address and calling? What do you say when you call? You;'re calling to express your continued interest? Do they mark down that you've called and/or what you say? Does anyone give updates over the phone or just by letter or email? Do you think 1 is more effective than the other? Sorry for the onslaught of questions! I feel like I've been slacking in showing my interest, but I don't know what else to do! Does anyone communicate directly with the dean?

one of the hardest decisions i've ever made.... ucsd vs. washU, and i chose ucsd. Sent out withdrawal via e-mail and sending out a hard copy tomorrow. I hope I open up a spot for one of you guys.

Maybe I got it! Got the call form Dean Dodson this afternoon. I've also got a tough decision in front of me, but I wanted to let everybody know that the list has started moving. Good luck everybody, and try sending an update letter/letter of interest or intent. Definitely was mentioned in our conversation today, and I feel like it might've been what pushed me over the top.

I called today and asked when they expect to see most of their movement. She said this week. She also said that the email they sent out was automatic. GL everyone.

My Theory:

They went to the waitlist for the "shoeins" and a bunch of them turned it down...thus leading to the email. Now they have to sort through the emails and peoples apps to fill up the rest of the spots.

the email's automatic. they send it every year right after the 15th. But you are right, they want to see who's still interested in the waitlist (since there's so much movement after the 15th that for some, washU might not be worth waiting for anymore) and that way the dean doesn't have to make useless phone calls.

I think that the waitlist decisions may still be made by committee (maybe a smaller, executive committee) rather than the dean getting sole authority, like at some schools.

No one has posted getting accepted since we all got the "Do you want to remain on the waitlist?" e-mail. Are they still reevaluating the list of alternates or do the small numbers waitlisters accepted make assumptions based on SDN sample size too innacurate to be worthwhile? According to the letter, 50 people will come off the waitlist. If 1 in 10 people on that list are SDNers, the three who have already posted put us halfway there. I think the paranoia is taking over...

ok, wow, i feel like a loser being the only non-thriver. a deader, perhaps? anyway, for the sake of bandwagoning/accurate representation, i'm a non-thriver, still waiting, got the general email. and now i'm a little bit depressed knowing that most of their movement is this week (which i'm willing to bet meant monday). sorry for the pessimism, i'm actually quite happy to be going where i've already been accepted, but would totally be the person living in a hotel in st. louis after getting THE CALL 12 hours before orientation 🙂

If Wash U was going to get to most waitlisters by today, it's been awfully quiet... Does anyone know if they convene they standard Thursday night admissions meeting to rank the remaining waitlisters? ahumdinger, any new info? I'm starving...
