Lol, I know very little, the sim course taught me some things. I figure I have over a year to get a little bit of practice here and there so when I start I wont be too lost.

I going to post of pic of my tooth in progress later on tonight.

I actually got my enitre kit for less than 35 bucks.... I just bought a carving set off ebay and wax from A2zdental. I already have a alginate mold that I will use to wax up, I filed down half the teeth and I am going to use the other half as guides( to compare dental anatomy features)

The typodont is what makes the other one so expensive.

I took a tooth carving class at BYU, it's takes a lot of practice to see improvement in your work. Do you have access to a micrometer? Much easier when you are going for accuracy with measurements instead of just eye balling it.

If you need a stone model to practice on just go to a local ortho office. We make stone models all day and always have throw away scraps after we make the retainers. They could probably even let you take your own impression, pour the study model, and you could do a waxup.

You guys make me feel like I won't be ready for school at all haha. All I've been doing is memorizing head/neck bones, arteries and muscles 🙁

Meh, I figure I have enough time in school to learn wax ups.

What do you think?

I think you need A LOT of work! But that's probs bc you are all gunners and waxing up before you start DSchool and learn proper technique and anatomy.

You know what I think of waxing up (besides for completely usless)?

Here is a picture of an onlay waxup I did in my D1:

Its not the best, but you have PLENTY of time in d-school dedicated to waxing. You have your anatomy class then every time you make an indirect restoration during your first operative course then in fixed, and in every other freaking course ever it seems like.

ARE YOU GUYS CRAZY!?!?! WHY WOULD YOU PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS SORT OF TORTURE!?

I've been to a handful of sim courses. I think it was nice to experience (just a tiny glimpse of what's ahead of me in school). I don't think it hurts to hold a couple tools, get familiar with wax (the first time I couldn't figure out how to make it stay on), and tinker a little, but I don't intend to invest time or money into trying to learn it. Seems like I'll pick up more bad habits than good. But I understand there are certain personalities who just don't want to walk in blindly and want to try to prepare a little.

From what I hear, each school is different in the amount of wax work you do and the purpose it holds. Anatomy and dexterity are obvious and I see the value there. But I like that some of these newer programs I've looked into are easing up on it.

You can practice "carving" all you want, but without understanding the anatomy of teeth it is absolutely meaningless.

haha... have you gotten to Maxillary artery yet? 17 freaking branches, and which foramen they enter and whats near them (nerve, vein, which muscle/tissue they supply).... good times. Took me like 2 hours to organize it all into 1 giant poster JUST FOR 1 freaking artery

dont worry… there is plenty more of where that came from. just wait till you get to micro…and histo… and biochem… and pharmacology… 🙂 Honestly, don't stress now though, enjoy this time off.

I agree 100%. If you can't contain your gunner ways and just have to play in the hot wax and memorize all the branches of the maxillary artery, do yourself a favor, and don't tell your classmates thats what you were doing all summer. Don't want to be the outed as the overachieving gunner that you are on the first day.

HAHA I must admit I am a little bit of a gunner... But I really enjoy it. 😀
here is a bit more progress. Like Jeffity said just trying to get a feel the tools and what not.

little judgmental, are we not?
I had some free time this summer, decided to brush up on some anatomy.... all of a sudden I am an "overachieving gunner"?

Since when does one's free-time activities decide one's gunner status? Y'all are a little quick to pull out that label. There's nothing wrong with being curious, ambitious, and trying to prepare a little. It doesn't make anyone a gunner any more than it makes you a slacker for not doing the same.

+5👍

4000+ posts before dental school. Ya, you aren't a gunner.

Take it easy. I was just messing with you guys. Good luck in dental school. If your SDN activity reflects your work ethic you'll be great.

can someone post a link to where i can get one of these? my bro is currently applying and i feel like he would enjoy something like this

ebay has some deals on waxing tools. but their from china and about 1/10 the price of name brand. im still debating on whether or not i should get one.

i use the one at work. along with presentation wax, which is a lot cleaner than that blue wax. if you can get it through an office, its a good deal on 12 1.5oz cans, for like $26.

last week one of the guys that interns with us and I made some dracula teeth. it was fun.

but yes, you learn alot by waxing

This is where I bought the tools from

The tools arent the best but they work fine.

I chose to buy blue for the contrast purposes( I cant see details to well with white)

As for the teeth I practice on I have some alginate molds that I filed down the teeth and try to rebuild them or you buy something like this

http://cgi.ebay.com/Kilgore-Dental-...ultDomain_0&hash=item3cb9148366#ht_500wt_1156

I do not use a bunson burner I just have little candles to heat up my tools

Without the proper training or course, there's no point in picking up a set of waxup instruments. You wouldn't know how to use them. Also, using a candle will only tarnish the instruments black and make them nasty. You need an alcohol lamp or bunsen burner.

I might try out the alcohol lamp lol

Good post, you answered my question before I asked it🙂
