Hey all, I already go to school here but I'm doing a modified track (extra year for research) so I'll be graduating in the 2010 class. If anyone is interested my email is [email protected]

Congrats to all of you who got in this year, Wayne State is an amazing place and you will get more clinical experience here than anywhere in the country.

When there's a new procedure:
-University of Michigan students know the theory behind it
-Michigan State students have read about it
-Wayne State students have actually done it, and know what the hell they're doing 👍

Hi all,

I just wanted to introduce myself: My name is Lauren and I am from po-dunk-ville Nevada. I will be at Jefferson next year, and (as a rural dweller) I really have no idea what I'm going to do in a big city... or where to live? 😱 I was just wondering if anyone else thinks the residence hall prices are a little outrageous? It seems like one could easily get an apartment in the city for that price. Whats so special about the Jefferson residence halls? And, is anyone looking for a roommate for an apartment, maybe the ben franklin house?

Well, I am so excited to meet all of you, and I know that 2010 will be the best class that JMC has seen yet!

Best

Sorry Wayne State Students-- I have no idea how my post ended up here!

I apologize over and over... Best to all of you!

Just drop Marilyn O Brian a line, her office is far right when you first walk in student affairs.

I will also be matriculating this fall!! Where do you all plan on living? I hope to live close to campus to minimize driving time and need a roommate to share. If anyone's interested let me know!!!

I'm going to go live in Royal Oak, I heard that a lot of med students live there and the drive isn't that bad (I think it's 15 minutes). I'm moving in with one of my current roommates who also got accepted at wayne. We might also get another roomie who will hear from Wayne next week.

When there is no construction and traffic is light.
Which is never.
good luck on getting used to Detroit driving.
I suggest that you plan out as many routes as possible from where ever you end up living down to school - since you are going to need more than just 75 and woodward.

hey guys! fellow wayne stater here. i'll be matriculating in august as well.

not sure about housing right now. i can live with family, but in washington twp, which doesn't make for a great commute. but, the economics make more sense. not sure what i'll do.........

anyway, just wanted to say hello. i look forward to meeting my fellow med students in the fall!

Anyone has any news about the waitlist? Not much is posted in Pre-Allopathic threads. Thanks.

How long is the commute? I live about 25-1hr (avg ~35mins) away depending on traffic. It sucks. Partially the reason I don't go to class. Still though, if you have less than 45min commute, I would say live with your parents. After anatomy, you can always not go to class as much.

With food, rent, and utilities figured in, you would probably save close to $12k per year... $48k over 4 yrs and if you figure in interet you would probably nearly save $75k.

Ofcourse it depends on the day, but I can make it down there in around 40-45 min. unless we're talking "rush hour(s)" (6:30-8:30am).

What time does class start in the a.m.??? Is there any way to access a class schedule? I couldn't find one on their website.

rush hour(s) tend to last a bit longer than that in Detroit

cfdavid said:

Varies with the course block that you are in and from day to day

cfdavid said:

Best way would be to find a current student that is willing to pull up your schedule on Outlook (at least until you get your WSU-SOM outlook account).

for our first year, the 2/3 of the year classes started at 10am (for the most part. there were some 8 and 9am days). the last 1/3 was mostly 9am.

On 94 (near detroit) rush hour goes from about 6:30-10am and 3:30pm-7:00pm on most days. I can't speak for other highways.... but there are plenty of days where I wish I had an assault rifle....

hey man, i'm from washington twp. too and i will be matriculating at wayne in the fall. what's your name, we may know each other. anyway i definitely do not want to commute from home b/c the traffic is awful. i was going to look at places in royal oak and the riverfront apartment complex in detroit. does anyone know anything about the riverfront apartments or have any suggestions about apartments in royal oak?

Try taking a look at
http://www.homepagepro.com/detroit/

It is a website that was put together by someone in the class of 2009.

I still say unless you really plan on taking advantage of the nightlife in RO (with your rare spare time), y'all should consider the Grosse Pointes.
There are lots of rental units (flats, houses, etc) and it's as close or closer to school than RO (and has more routes to get there).

I was just admitted to the c/o 2010. I am so excited and also looking to live in the Detroit/Royal Oak area. For those of you know don't know anyone else going to Wayne in August, are you all living alone?

Contact the student affairs office.
Ask to speak with Tracy.
Have her send you a copy of the roommate/housemate list that she manages.

I'm looking for places in Gross Pointe. I'm pretty sure I'll be living alone (with my pooch). OldJeeps is correct though, there are plenty of places for rent in GP, and is at least 5 or 10 minutes closer to school than RO.

I live at Riverfront. Have for the past 2 years, and will for at least the next year. It's not cheap, but it is p.i.m.p. I'm on the 21st floor with a balcony and the river in my backyard. People's jaws drop when the come over and watch the freighters go by. Anyways, if you want to come check it out, or decide that you want to move in, say I refered you and we'll split the check. Just PM me.

how do i even start to find places in grosse point? my parents might buy a condo for me to live in and then i will pay them rent. any ideas on how to start?

You can check out the classifieds in the Gross Point News. My aunt subscribes, so I've been using her p-word to access them online. But, I'm sure you could pick up a hard copy if you went to GP.

I checked out a few places tonight. When I was looking around I saw a bunch of "for rent" signs up with phone numbers that were not in the GP News. So, I took those #'s as well.

I was not happy with the one unit I actually went into (mostly I did drive by's to check out the general area). The guy was asking 700 not including utilities, but the carpet was old and it just didn't seem clean.

I called on a few others on the same street that looked very nicely kept (from the outside) but they were 3 bedroom, 1st floor (duplex- upper and lower) units ranging from 1200-1300/mo. That's out of my range, and the only was I'd pull the trigger on something like that (assuming the inside was nice) would be with a roommate. Oh well, I'll keep looking.
Let me know how your search goes.

You’re in Ann Arbor, right? Make the drive over and spend some time cruising the area.
If you want to go the condo route, I think I might know of some in the Grosse Pointes (maybe on Jefferson).
And like cfdavid said try to pick up some of the local publications while you’re in the area.

I would offer to send some time showing you around the GPs but am kind of busy studying for boards at the moment.

What goes on during orientation? If it is as pointless as college orientation I think i'm going to skip the last couple of days.

I would hold that thought until you actually start orientation (and see the week’s schedule). Did it feel extremely pointless at times - yes. Might they change things since I dealt with orientation - yes.

IMO Wayne should make some changes - including adding some stuff to orientation - that would make things flow better.
For example, they decided early last year that all first years had to be BCLS certified (a good decision in my opinion) – but then they screwed up with how they implemented it (by putting the BCLS course on a study day before a BIG exam). Now if they put the BCLS during orientation then life would be better all around.

I have been considering housing in Dearborn.... seems to be just as close as RO... any thoughts?

#1: what are you looking for in an area?
-Close to hospitals for MS3 and MS4?
-Close to WSU-SOM/DMC?
-Short commute?
-Libraries, coffee shops, etc for studying?
-Restaurants, clubs, social scene ( 🙄 like you’ll have the time and $ 🙄 ), etc?
-Parks?

#2: Do you want to live solo or with someone else?
#3: Are you planning on going to class regularly or being a med school by correspondence student?
#4: There are other ‘burbs that are closer than RO – thing is that they tend to be a bit quieter and be occupied by a slightly older crowd.

Where you live can be a very personal decision so it’s a bit limited on what we can tell you. I would suggest that you spend part of a day in the area that you are thinking to live to get a feel for it. Perhaps it would be wise to write up a list of what you are looking for and prioritize it and use that you help you in making your decision.

Having been in the area for 5+ years, I would suggest that you live somewhere that has multiple reliable routes to places that you go to regularly (I personally have four major routes to the DMC). Keep in mind that sometimes/frequently the only reliable thing about the freeways is that they’ll be horribly backed up – with a bit of variability in just how badly.

Also, you might try asking that question on the “Wayne State” forum since you’ll find more current students on there that’ll voice their opinions.

For the people looking in Grosse Pointe, use www.craigslist.org

As for living in Dearborn, I think it's underrated. There are some very nice apartments, and the drive time is about 10 min max. Closer than GP. They just re-did I94, so you'll be fine for awhile in terms of construction.

Oldjeeps is pushing GP so he can double the student population there.

Yes, some of the stuff that goes on at orientation is completely worthless (small group sessions for example) but if you've worked hard enough to make it to medical school you should try to attend for a few reasons:

1) Activating your email account at the library session
2) Registration / White Coat / OneCard / Insurance
3) Getting your BLS card (from what I've been told they're adding it)
4) Free food (w00t)
5) Meet the faculty and deans
6) Get aquainted with the school and area
7) And if all this fails....just come so you can meet your classmates. This is your career now, and these people will be your colleagues someday. Make friends. Play nice.

Oh, and FYI I'm living in UT on the top floor. Great view of Detroit! But I can also see Scott Hall.....I can never get away.... 😡

...except for the fact that they just started more construction on 94. 94 sucks ass. After I moved here I was told that there has always been construction on 94 and there probably always will be. So far this has held to be true. However, Dearborn is not that bad of a drive, but I would think the drive would probably average at least 15 depending on what part you live in.. probably longer during rush hours.

There has always been construction on every major highway in Michigan. The orange barrels never end.

Has anybody recieved any info recently? It just seems a bit weird that orientation is in a month and I dont know jack about like what classes we'll be taking etc.

You'll be starting out with Gross Anatomy and Histology. I also thought it was wierd to not hear anything from Wayne for a few months after I got accepted. Just make sure you have all you stuff together. You can always call to make sure, which is probably a good idea anyway. Congrats on getting in! 👍

I don't know about Grosse Pointe, but if you are interested in a really nice condo that is 7 to 9 minutes from school, you may want to consider the Riverfront condos. Spectacular views, very safe environment and lots of amenities. I got one and don't regret it. PM me if you have further questions.

Hello, I just found out I got in last week, and I still havent received my packet from Wayne yet. All I've got is a separate letter about the WSU Acess ID, and an email with a hepB vaccination form. Can anyone give me an idea of what else I am missing (or not missing)? Booklist/finaid/etc? Mail from Detroit usually takes a day or two to arrive, but after four days I called and was told it was sent through their mail room, which takes over a week. 😕

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to say that I will be in this years class and congrats to everyone. 😀 I was surprised to see only a handful of ppl have logged on, especially when wayne has the largest medical class in the country 😱 .

Hello Rux,

I hate to say it.................................but welcome to wayne state's politics and red tape. 😡

hey everyone-- just wondering if people had started figuring out living situations. i'm hoping that as summer comes to an end i can inquire about some good places people have found.

🙂

Rux,
You can get an idea of the booklist off their website:

http://www.med.wayne.edu/academic_student_programs/basic_science/

Browse through the curriculum guide pdf and you'll see last year's booklist. It hasn't changed much from the year before. And I don't expect it would change that much for this year either, although there are several books with newer versions either out, or scheduled to come out later this year. I posted a question last month to the current students about which books they'd recommend, and got a few great responses, so have a search for that one in the Wayne thread.

Hi everyone,

I am a soon-to-be second year and just wanted to welcome you all to Wayne!

We didn't really recieve a whole lot of stuff from them until orientation either, so just show up on the first day, and you'll get the schedule and all that good stuff. As far as books go, I usually found it best to wait until classes started to see if I actually needed the book before buying it. There's a medical book store right by school that has all our required and recommended books at normal prices, so I always found it easiest just to get my books there.

I live downtown (Lafayette towers) and am staying in the same apt. for another year b/c I really like it down here, so if anyone has any questions about living downtown or Lafayette in particular, feel free to PM me and ask away🙂

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your summer 🙂

hey WSU students. I hope you are enjoying your summer! I am a female WSU student looking for a roommate for the 2006-2007 school year. I have an apartment in the Belcrest apartments on Cass Ave. Apartment has full kitchen (with utensils/appliances), dining room, and living room. You will have your own bathroom and closet. Apartment building has secured entry, swimming pool, and onsite laundry. Management is friendly. Apartment is within walking distance to the WSU recreation center, medical campus, DPL, DIA, Starbucks, and WSU-SOM/DMC. In addition, apartment is near WSU shuttle stops for easy access to campus and bus stops. Please PM if you are interested. Thank you. Good luck!
