I have been fortunate to receive acceptances to both Wayne State and Creighton (Omaha) and would appreciate some updated perspectives on the two schools. I would like to keep my options open for residency opportunities, but am leaning toward interventional cardiology at this moment. Will be out of state so financials will be essentially the same.
Wayne State
Pros—close to family and friends although out of state; know the state well and could see myself practicing there; mission to serve the urban population of Detroit is aligned with my interests; established program; excellent clinical training; seemingly good research opportunities; and extensive home residency programs in every specialty: new more progressive dean and updated curriculum.
Cons—keep hearing this repeated concern about the disorganized admin; questions about deteriorating relationships with hospitals for rotations; large class size; and lack of support for the students.
Creighton
Pros—connected really well with student and faculty I met during interview; smaller class size; a sense that the admin is supportive and students collaborative more than competitive; seemingly well established program with good (albeit less funding) research opportunities.
Cons—removed from support network I have in MI; know very little about Omaha, but heard good things; fewer home residencies may limit opportunities; and perhaps not same reputation as Wayne in terms of residency placement although both schools seem to match well.
Summary
Money being the same, thoughts on which would be the better option?
