Hi guys I’ve been accepted to Wayne, Drexel, and SLU and am waiting to hear from Tulane (Acceptance Range) and Illinois (Deferred Decision). I am out of state for all options but finances are thankfully not a big factor for me. As of now, I’m leaning towards Neurology or Child Neurology as a specialty with other potential interests being Psyciatry, or Anesthesiology. Based on info from schools, not worried about ability to find research at any of the three.
Wayne State
Pros
* Home residencies
* Couple of friends who may be attending
* Earlier clinical exposure
* Service learning built in curriculum
Cons
* P/F/H preclinical?
* Beginning of July start date: logistically would be very difficult for me. I am currently doing Americorps in another state and am set to end mid July, which means I’d have to forfeit the Educational award of $6000 dollars.
* Disorganized admin/ potential loss of affiliate sites for rotations
* Interview felt the least personal
Drexel
Pros
* P/F pre-clinical, Flipped classroom (did best in these style classes in college), students seem to have a ton of free time
* want to end up in the Northeast where Drexel seems to match well
* Accepted to the MD/MPH program
* Specialty specific advising fourth year
* Closer to family (grandparents in PA and CT so would have opportunity to visit them a lot which is important to me) , several close friends in Philly area grad programs
* Community outreach built into curriculum, HOP clinics to volunteer in
* Super personal interview, got good vibes from current students at campus visit
Cons
* Lack of home hospital but rotate through many hospitals with residency programs. Regional campuses but have option to rotate through hospitals around Philly instead.
* 94% match rate this year? Possible reputation of being harder to match
SLU
Pros
* 1.5 year preclinical, P/F, optional lectures
* Home hospital and residencies, most centralized for rotations
* Great faculty interview experience (on par with Drexel)
Cons
* No ties to st.louis so would have no support system going in
* Least excited about moving to st.louis and needing a car from M1
* Lack of student involvement( seemed like not many student organizations)
* Nervous about political leanings of students and possibly education differing from mine (student interviewer mentioned there being a pro-life student group which concerns me slightly)
* Least health advocacy focused which is a big passion of mine
