I just got off the waitlist for Wayne State and now have to decide between Wayne State and Michigan State’s MD programs. I am a Michigan resident and tuition is pretty similar. I will most likely want to do an internal medicine residency and then specialize.

MSU CHM
Pros
  • early clinical exposure
  • true P/F
  • more time for step prep
  • already found housing/roommate
  • partnership with Henry Ford

Cons
  • not guaranteed a spot at Henry Ford for M3/M4
  • average step score is lower

Wayne State
Pros
  • will live with family (commute is 40 -50 min)
  • higher ranked, more prestige, stronger match list
  • more research opportunities
  • emphasis on urban medicine

Cons
  • have heard admin can be difficult (not sure if that’s true or if it really matters)
  • more exams and a P/F/honors system
  • class size is bigger (300 students)

I'm gonna make the case for MSU, and here's why: the 40 min commute with Wayne is potentially problematic. Think about it- if you are driving to on campus mandatories, that's an 1:20 deal (and idk what the traffic deal is). Time that could be used studying, doing exercise, socializing, sleeping, ect. Step score- not as important with Step 1 P/F (unless you are talking about Step 2). Ultimately, more pro's and less cons for MSU, and it's not crazy far from family support either, so I'd go with your heart on this one.
