Wanted to be the first....

Haha yes I just got off work to find that great email in my inbox...glad to see my undergrad institution showed me soooo much love....oh well, it was expected!!!

screw them.

from this day forward, i will always root for ohio state 😀

nittany lionssssssss all the way!

I'm rooting for Appalachian State from now on

I just got rejected too...

Expensive and cold this school is.

umich is ******ed...do they think they're really that smart interviewing people completely based on numbers??? good job umich, you're ******ed. btw im not a bitter applicant, i got interviewed by many other schools in their range.

Add me to this list! Oh well, I was going to most likely decline (90%) anyways.

If you got accepted at another good school you're better off anyway.

The state of Michigan is falling apart at the seams. Did you want to be 40 miles from Detroit for the next four years?

In addition there is a common personality problem in Ann Arbor. About 30% of the UM "family" is about as arrogant and narcissistic as any group of people you will ever meet. They will tell you with a straight face that UM is number 1 in every possible way. Have you noticed on these threads the number of user names that incorporate "wolverine" or the number of block "M" avatars? After a while it becomes toxic.

Be happy.👍

Another one bites the dust. One decision closer to knowing where I'll be in August!

Ahh....just how I like to start the morning...with a steaming hot mug of rejection....

Hey a$$hole, some of us happen to live in or near Detroit and have friends and family members currently unemployed, struggling to make ends meet. I don't appreciate you making light of the economic struggles and unemployment rate in Michigan 👎

I nominate this as the dumbest comment posted on SDN in the last 10-12 months. Congrats! Rejoice and be happy, you have been recognized for your work.

I second that. What a narrow-minded view. I guess you can say the same thing about WashU being next to East St. Louis, Hopkins for being in Baltimore, and Pennsylvania to being in West Philly. Who wants to go to these schools anyways?

The thing is that it's tough to judge a city you've never actually been in. I have been in Detroit for a long time and I hear this crap a lot from people who have never set foot here, or have dropped by once or twice. It gets irritating. I know that the poster was just trying to make people feel better about the rejection, but it was unnecessary. You forgot Yale in New Haven, Albert Einstein in the Bronx, and Columbia in Harlem 😀.

Yea, I hear ya...I can't say I live in Detroit, but a suburb, but yea...the city gets all this undeserved crap. It's no where near as bad as people make it out to be, the city has really cleaned up and revitalized in terms of economy in the last couple of years.

And also, to the poster, it's called school spirit, as annoying as it can be.

While we're at it, let's add: UMiami for being in a rough neighborhood, Emory for being w/in a short driving distance of Bankhead, UT for it location in Memphis and Wayne State for actually being in Detroit...Clearly, everyone with an acceptance or applying to these schools should withdraw their apps if they value their lives🙄

I was born at old Providence Hospital four blocks from the original Motown studios on West Grand Boulevard. My dad worked at the Rouge plant for 35 years and at Highland Park for eight years before that. I have seen at least 200 Tiger home games.

We used to go to Lafayette Coney Island after the bars closed.

I own three American made cars and making light of Michigan's economic situation is the last thing I'd do. In fact I am terribly saddened by Michigan's plight.

Then that makes your comment even worse I'm sorry to say.

True that. The only way to improve the city is by bringing people in, and thats what I want to do by going to wayne state (interview in 2 weeks). I ain't scurred.

Oh Boy folks. Chill out. I believe this is a thread about being rejected from UMich. Let us wallow in our pity.

I got my reject this morning as well. Since I hadn't heard from them for 5 months after turning in my secondary, I had crossed them off my list a long time ago. Therefore, I'm not terribly heart broken.

Exactly. Unfortunately, about 10 of my 17 schools left have similarly been crossed off my list in anticipation of my inevitable rejection.

But hey! Another year with my life in limbo should be fun.

Don't forget U of Chicago.

anyone think they actually regret it?

Did you ever think thats because people love their time at Mich? I'm raised to HATE the wolverines (born and raised in rival school), but after visiting Michigan I put aside my hatred for maize and blue since I was blown away by how happy everyone is there.

Um.. flextime? hell yeah. Who wouldn't love that??

Everyone has the right to vent when they are frustrated/upset, so go nuts, but if you all hate Michigan so much, why did you apply?

What really gets me is that UMich is all about saying how they look for "well-rounded" applicants and see beyond just numbers, because that makes their Michigan "community" diverse and whatnot. Even my pre-med advisor told me that! I wish they'd just be honest -- UChicago doesn't have any pretenses about being numbers ******, neither does Wash U. Why, oh, why, must you lie to us, Michigan??

I will second this. Pritzker was the only school that rejected me besides Michigan pre-interview. They seem to be much more of a fit school. UMich is perhaps a little more concerned with numbers and prestige as they do have those autoinvites.

detroit is gross. i've been there several times. i don't see how saying you don't like detroit is "making light" of economic conditions.

Probably more prestige. I had the numbers for an auto-invite but my undergraduate institution wasn't one of the ones "on the list" for the auto.

chalk up another rejection here

I'm sorry that you were all rejected, but Michigan truly does look for "well-rounded" applicants who have accomplished wonderful things beyond the "numbers." The auto-invite thing is mostly an efficiency mechanism - the admissions committee found that they would have ended up interviewing the majority of auto-invites anyway. So with the automatic system, interview dates start filling up faster and people know sooner that they have an interview, which does ease some anxiety for students and is less work for the adcom.

Further, some of my best friends are on the admissions committee and have told me first-hand that the auto-invites may be (and are) rejected post-interview if they don't have the "beyond the numbers" qualifications.

Thousands of people apply to every medical school, and I'm sure many of you were more than qualified to interview at Michigan, but it just didn't happen this time. I'm sure you're all interviewing at other great programs.

I'm at Michigan and am extremely happy with the diverse and dynamic people who surround me every day. I hope this clears up some misconceptions. Please don't bash a program that is not nearly as numbers-focused as many seem to think.

My principle complaint is in regards to the "auto-interview." There are not THAT many applicants with stats that fulfill their auto-interview cut-off...so why discriminate between undergraduate institution in which to give the auto-interviews to?

There are probably more people who fulfill their auto-invite stats than one might think...
But I am not sure why the committee discriminates based on undergraduate institution, so I can't really speak to that. I attended a relatively unknown undergrad, but I got in somehow. The number of people accepted who were auto-invited is not that high, to be honest.

I still hope I can do my fellowship there, so I am not going to bad mouth them for a rejection. I loved MCW anyway and I will for sure attend there if I get an acceptance. My rejection came on the heels of my MCW interview, and so it didn't bother me at all.

Well, I dunno about that, as I am rejected.

If I was bitter I would blame my rejection on my affiliation with a certain state down south.

But it probably has more to do with me not being that good of an applicant.

The only thing that truely bothers me is that it was a generic email. I paid good money for them to consider my application..the least they could do is send me a letter (not an email) with my name on it, instead of "dear applicant" every other school that has rejected me has been able to do that! In my opinion it is just tacky. Other than that..I am not surprised, I did not have the numbers, but I am hoping to maybe do my residency there!!

Just glancing at those little applicant profile things for the people posting on this thread, seems like there are a lot of well qualified people with strong numbers and strong experiences. Which then makes me ask... What on earth did you write on your application??

I would guess that the content of your personal statement and/or secondary essays was the means by which you were selected out. Then again, maybe it was just a moody application reviewer? Hard to say. Better to just be confident in what you want for yourself.

I just don't know why Michigan would cancel the last two interview dates because they had "too many qualified applicants." That is so weird.
