I am thinking of bringing my Stethoscope to my white coat ceremony....mainly for the pics.

Would this be ridiculous?

umm........yes. If you arent going to be using it on a patient, theres is no need to have it, let alone having it around your neck. Dont be that guy. If you must need it for pictures, have someone else hold it and then take it out for the pictures and then put it back.

Except for the fact that it makes you look insanely Alpha in pics.... 😀 😀 😀

Im just gonna tell all my friends to do it too so I won't stand out lol

There you go.

There you go.

I'm actually 99% sure I won't wear it actually.

Would feel so stupid if anyone asked why I had it.

Honestly I feel stupid wearing a white coat before even finishing med school as well lol

Just messin with you. 🙂 And yea, it does take some time getting comfortable wearing the white coat around.

I say go for it! The whole thing is so patently ridiculous that wearing your stethoscope won't make one iota of a difference--and it'll make for better pictures that your grandparents (or your aunt/parents/homeless bum you befriended--whoever gives a $hit about you going to med school) to show their buddies at the local dunkin donuts.

Sure, your classmates will forever think of you as that guy, but, let's be honest, you already are that guy, so just embrace it.

Btw, it's not a white coat--it's a ******* white jacket, and it's not something that anyone who'd actually finished med school would ever dream of wearing.

I actually kind of wish the ceremony wasn't required. The short white coat is forever a symbol of being on the absolute bottom of the totem pole. Having to wear one in front of a crowd makes me kind of cringe. 🙄

But yeah, I agree with Ryserr, no steth. Lol.

Aww, that's sad. I know we still have a looooong way to go but u should still be somewhat excited about what u've accomplished thus far. I can't wait for my white coat ceremony and for all my friends & family to be there supporting me. Remember, when it comes to the coat length, at least patients don't know the difference! lol 😛

...and also, I would say no to the stethoscope. ur pics would be pretty sweet tho. maybe just take them in private with ur family haha

YES! Don't be THAT guy, they'll figure it out in due time but don't announce it on Day 1. If you want "doctor" pictures take them at home after the ceremony.

Unfortunately, many of them do! And you often end up saying "my resident", "the doctor" and "your attending" a lot, admitting that you are neither of those.

A lot of patients also like to thoroughly check out name badges. It always feels a little weird to have someone staring at my chest before answering my questions.

But to Mast -- of course I'm happy about my accomplishments and will be asking family to attend. I'm just a non-trad and am feeling a little awkward going back to school and wearing the short coat again. I'm sure I'll adjust soon enough. 🙂

That's why I went to a school that gives med students the full length white coat

i agree with you on that, you dont really use it for much during 1st and 2nd year. the white coat should be celebratory post step 1 - here you go as you are off to rotations thing - IMO

i think i just threw up a little.

god dammit

Yes, ridiculous would be the nicest, most PC way to describe wearing a stethoscope to the ceremony . . . . .
All of the above. Note the emphasis.

Nursing school?

There are med schools that get long white coats. Mine uses them. We have to get a short one if we plan on doing externships at certain institutions.

At our school, you wear your white coat a lot during first year. We start seeing standardized patients within the first six weeks of first year, then every block after that (sometimes two in a block) and we start doing preceptorships around December so we wear them there too.

I acually only made this thread because my classmates came up with the idea and were seriously gonna do it.

you all fail.

I am looking forward to the White Coat ceremony. I hope it's rather relaxed and not formal. I don't need to hear speeches about the future of medicine, the responsibility, the honor....pfft. Too trite. I'm just looking forward to taking a nice pic with my Madre in my fresh white coat. 🙂
