"gross" as in large structures AND as in, well, gross. i don't want to go into anatomy lab next year feeling grossed-out because that is disrespectful to the people who donated their bodies, but i need to be desentisized. i've observed surgeries and i'm absolutely fine with those...it's the "these people are not alive" thing about anatomy lab that gets to me. what are some dissection websites where see pictures so i can GRADUALLY get used to it? please include a description of what i'll see on the websites so i am not shocked when i click on the link. thanks in advance.

Pretty sure its too late... You ARE a tool.

what the hell is going on here? what is so "toolish" about my question? is there something i'm missing? i'm looking for a website with pictures of dissections on them so that i can get an idea of what i'm in for. i haven't seen cut-up bodies before. wtf is the problem with that, seriously? i sincerely hope neither of you guys end up in my class next year.

I don't think pictures will go a great way to desensitizing you. If you want to get an idea though you could try checking out an anatomy atlas that uses pictures from a cadaver dissection such as "Color Atlast of Anatomy" by Rohen.

Its important to realize that these types of emotional responses are entirely natural you shouldn't be embarassed by them.

Oh and nevermind PilSeung, I'm surprised he hasn't been banned yet for trolling.

I know what you mean. I'm not sure it's that easy to get desensitized to it. I've watched medical shows that have dead bodies (actual ones) and I still feel like it will be a whole different feeling to see them in person.

Wow, what nice pictures...

The OP asked for gross. Volunteering at the ER can expose you to some pretty gross anatomy as well. I've seen an old necrotic and septic gun shoot wound to the face, massive stinky diabetic foot ulcers, severed digits, fresh gun shot wounds and plenty of blood. Strangely, though, the only thing that threatened to put me on the floor was watching a doc attempt a lumbar puncture several times cause he kept missing it. Watching that long needle go in and out repeatedly got a little trying. Anyway, I highly recommend volunteering at a level 1 trauma center to become desensitized, but you actually have to participate, ask to watch the gross stuff.

Thanks, Drogba.

kthanksbye, that's not exactly what i was looking for, but man, that electrocuted guy is NOT in good shape!!

anyway, i used the ol' search button (i won't neglect to do that again, i've learned my lesson!), and i found a recommendation for the kind of site I was looking for. if anyone's interested, here's an example. it's a close-up picture of a supine hand with the palm dissected out.

if anyone has similar examples of websites, i'd like to see it, but otherwise, i think i've gotten all the answers i need 🙄

Thanks, Drogba.

Somehow I don't think any of those guys are happy campers.

Yeah, I used to be squeamish until I started volunteering at the medical examiner's office and helping do full autopsies with them. Now it doesn't phase me. So I suppose repeated prolonged exposure to this sort of horrific stuff desensitizes one pretty well.

$30 dollars and a year ago would have gotten you into Body Worlds. Its not icky, really. The pictures kthanksbye posted are a bit revolting. Compared to anatomy lab, I don't feel anything will be that shock and awe. Like you, I need to get over the fact that it's a (dead) person (not to demean that person's life).

Thanks for the introduction to rotten.com. I think its pretty inconsiderate of you to post pictures like that when people don't know what the hell they are opening and I would hope you either remove them and provide links or a mod does.

I wonder what that guy was shot with, none of the head GSWs I've seen (very few btw) were anything close to that.

How did you go about getting that position?

Exactly, those picture are just for shock and awe. And if they're from rotten they're more than likely mislabeled (read an article a few years ago).

Yeah, one of my cases as an EMT wound up on there mislabeled as a motorcycle crash, when it was actually a GSW to the face.

It looks like you got your wish... It's like it never even happened. Not sure how it's inconsiderate. Seems like you were interested, nonetheless. Censorship is a wonderful thing. Anyway, I have seen things that come pretty close to that, even though they are few and far between, and if you spend much time in level 1 trauma, you will too. If they're already dead, though, they probably go straight to the morgue.

I actually just called them and asked if they accept pre-med volunteers. The next week I was there in a full body gown and face shield helping them saw away skulls and remove organs. They had me sign a few papers but didn't really go into depth over the legal aspect of me volunteering there. Perhaps being an EMT had something to do with it? I dunno, but it's quite an interesting place to go once a week. I don't want to go there more than that though, lol. 😱

I can never tell when you're being serious. However, I believe that is the article I read.
I was being completely and utterly serious with that post.

I have worked in a level 1 trauma and I have seen some disturbing things. Its inconsiderate because it takes people by surprise and impinges on their ability to choose to see or not see something that is highly disturbing. Its hardly censorship, its protecting peoples' freedom to choose what they are comfortable in viewing. If you linked to the pictures and noted they are of a highly disturbing nature I wouldn't have had a problem with them.

That is awesome my friend! I will definitely be making a similar call next semester.

The worst part about anatomy lab is DEFINITELY the smell and the stuff that you get on yourself. The dead bodies themselves are not a big deal. But formaldehyde (particularly cold formaldehyde) on your scrubs is disgusting, oily, and will never wash out completely. This part is hard to get over just by looking at pictures.

If you've already been accepted into med school, buy your own copy of Rohen's Photographic atlas. You'll use it next year, and it has photographs of dissected bodies. It would be a good investment.

U Mich also had a dissection website - I don't know if they still do. The pictures were not very good quality (and definitely not as good as Rohen's) but adequate. I'll try and dig up a link.

👍
Thanks, Drogba.

Don't worry, it's not disrespectful in any way to have 'grossed out' feelings when you first get to lab. It's totally normal, and many of your classmates will have them too. Pictures online will not help desensitize you, that comes from actually being there. However, some great sites for helping you learn anatomy can be found on the UMich gross anatomy website. Our class used it almost as a supplemental text for the lab portion of the class, it's A++ awesome. I also found some dissection videos on there.
