Any other schools find this was a weird year for admissions? We have an incoming class of 2 the last I heard. I'm not sure how that happened - we had a pretty competitive pool this year so maybe they just all had more offers than the typical, but we're usually making no more than 1-2 offers per acceptance, and this year there were faculty who extended 4 offers and didn't get anyone. I think the department wanted to keep it small, but I don't think any expected THIS small🙂

Just wondering if this was just an anomaly or if other schools have weird stuff going on this year.

I'd feel super weird if I were 1 of those 2!
Imagine orientation!

It'd be like:
Head of Department: "Good morning... both of you. In case you're wondering if we're going to wait on the others before we start, well... no because you're the chosen 2"

I don't know about the program at the school I'm going to, but some of my friends are going to a Counseling Psych PhD program with 16 in their cohort. 😱 WOW!

My class is going to be smaller than the average at my school, too (although not quite as small as 2!). We have 5 incoming and usually they take about 10. For us, it's all abt state budget cuts for higher education-- in order to fund everyone they had to keep it small.

If it is a nationwide trend, then the graduate schools have single handedly solved the internship match problem 4 years from now. 🙂

Mine usually takes 7, but decided to offer an 8th spot this year...and now can't seem to fill it. Apparently they are still trying to find an 8th person, but I can always dream that they won't and there'll be more money to spread around for the rest of us =/

The prof I'm RAing for now was planning on taking two new students, only ended up making two offers (I guess no one else she interviewed was a good fit), had one accept and one decide not to go to grad school . . . anywhere. So now she's just taking one student. I can't imagine going through the whole application process, getting accepted, and THEN deciding you're not motivated enough to make it through school.

When I start in the fall my cohort will only have 4 and I'll also be the only new member of my lab, but that's normal for this program.

wow ollie that is crazy. i guess if i hung out on the waitlist longer I might have gotten an offer!

We finally filled all 8 positions here, but it was reportedly difficult to do so. There were those individuals who delayed responding with their decision for various reasons and then there were a handful of positions that required a number of waitlisted people being called. Some of the faculty were apparently unsure whether we would have a "full" entering class for the upcoming year. I don't think we actually had a complete cohort until the last possible moment.

My prof offered to 2 people this year, which is apparently unusual as he only offers 1 normally.

However, what I heard is that I am almost primarily research focused and the other individual is almost primarily clinically focused so he figured we would round out the team 😉
