Weird Correlation Between MCAT's and SAT's

That reminds me...did you guys take the old SAT for TIP (at least that's what it's called on the East Coast) in 7th grade. That old one was much harder IMHO, but then again I was 13 at the time...

My advisor said people that do well on the SATs usually do well on the MCAT. It didn't happen to me...

I remember TIP! I didn't take the SAT tho. Took the ACT as my 7th grade math skillz werent quite as fantastic. :wink:

I went to small town public high and had never heard of a prep course for the SAT/ACT. I agree there is a stong correlation among these test, but studying will have a much greater effect on the MCAT than on the SAT. Don't you agree? BTW, I did take a Kaplan course, which I wouldn't recommend, and did some moderate studying for the MCAT.

These tests are just too different for there to be a very direct correlation. Granted, I'll agree that those who score high on the SAT will, on average, score higher on the MCAT and other standardized tests. But if you look at the SAT, what is it other than a glorified vocabulary exam? The MCAT requires 100 times more preparation than the SAT ever did, and therein lies the problem. The amount of preparation varies greatly from one person to the next. IMO, two tests that that would have a much better correlation would be the SAT and the GRE. I dunno how many of you have taken the GRE, but I took it last December, just in case I don't get in this year, and my scores were eerily similar to my SAT scores.

They're pretty much the exact same test, except that the GRE is computerized, and you have to go straight through on all the sections, which kinda sucks. No coming back to the tough questions you don't know. Oh yeah, the GRE also has an analytical section to mess with your head and make you solve stupid little puzzles.

I feel stupid now seeing all these great scores, I only scored a 27 on the ACT🙁 Of course that is after my sophmore year, zero studying, and almost flunking out of all my high school classes (I was a big time slacker). Haven't taken ther MCAT yet so let's hope there is NO correlation!!!

Hmmm, I was talking about this with a friend of mine the other day. I think that there is some correlation between the two since they are both standardized but since the science sections are so specifically geared towards us "science-people" that you can't really read too much into them. Although I did notice that most people over 1400 on SAT's really smacked the MCAT around...just an observation though.

I think there is a correlation between the math portion of the SAT and physical sciences on the MCAT. I think there is less of a correlation between the verbal portion of the SAT and the verbal portion of the MCAT.

I do not think there is a correlation. On my PSAT I scored a 800 on the math and a 700 on the verbal. I should have done well on the stupid mcat, except I cannot do the verbal.

This is the tabulated table of the first 24 sat-mcat scores sorted by ascending order.
A clear fact is sat cores over 1300 correspond to mcat scores over 30. Using robust linear fit, I came up with a formula to predict mcat scores from sat scores.

MCAT = 9.39 + .017255*SAT

As more data collected, the model will be more accurate.However, will is a real big factor.

My friend scored in the same percentile on the SAT (1440) and the LSAT (162). Both 96th percentile!

I have to agree that there is a correlation, although I really can't explain the huge spread between some scores--i.e. less than 1300 SAT's with greater than 35 MCAT's!

The HUGH spread in the low-SAT-high-MCAT score is due to the WILL factor which is extremely HUGH. SAT measures mostly IQ while MCAT measures both IQ and dedication.

who studies for the sat, though? i think mcat can really change with copious studyin as far as the sciences go -- i got my highest score in bio although i'm not a bio major and i crammed for it in a month. go figure. but verbal was another sat nightmare...

I did do pretty well on the MCATs, though, and I always do really well on standardized tests.

w00t! Well as the biggest deviator from the norm I guess I should explain why. 😎

I dropped out of HS when I was 15. I got a GED right after I turned 16. Udel (my undergraduate school) promised to take me after I proved myself by taking part-time classes here (since I'm a resident). But, after a year of part-time classes they told me they would only accept me after I took the SAT and scored at least 1000.

So I didn't even study for the SAT. I just popped in and did what I did and got on with my life. I've been working my ass off ever since 🙂

I took the old SAT as a sophmore in 1993. I got an 1100 without studying a bit. I probably should have studied and taken it again, but 1100 was high enough to get my scholarship. They have changed the way they score the SAT twice since then. I believe an 1100 then equates to 1180+ now. Anyways, I got a 29 on the MCAT. I was robbed too, it should have been 31!!!

I think the ACT and MCAT correlation may be more accurate, mine were pretty close:
