Hello. I'm a 3rd yr student and I just fractured my lateral malleolus. They gave me a CAM walker (boot). I'm on inpatient IM right now and will be on gen surg next month. Is it ok to be wearing the boot around the hospital? In the OR? Do I need to talk to someone about it? Just wondering if there is advice on this topic.

Should be okay on IM. I guess the problem with surgery is finding a covering to fit it. At least where I am you technically don't have to have shoe coverings, but 5 weeks in ORs with a boot sounds pretty grungy to me.

are you on crutches or just in the walking boot? i fractured my lateral malleolus the weekend before my anesthesia rotation, and it ended up being fine. mostly because I could sit down when i needed to, and i wasnt scrubbing. (I was on crutches for 2 weeks) you should be fine on IM, but when you are on surgery, it might be hard to get enough time to elevate your leg unless you advocate for yourself. i agree that you should use the boot covers, because the last thing you want is a bloodied boot that you have to keep wearing and can't really clean. if you are on crutches, you cant really scrub, but by next month you should be fine. if anyone gives you a hard time, you should have someone at your school who deals with disabilities, and you can get a letter from your doctor saying you need to elevate your leg. in my experience, people were really accommodating about things like broken bones.

My classmate fractured bilateral calcanei during m3; she basically rocked bilateral cams on the wards and it was fine.
