The optometry forum has been DEAD lately with the exception of depressing and angry threads...👎 (and the cool pics from Dr. Hom 🙂 )

For those of you in the Class of 2010 who have started class in the last few days, how was it? Do you like your classmates? Professors? Glad you made the choice you did? Scared ****less?

Do share!

All I can say is, optometry students here at SCCO party hard!!! Well, for the first week that is, since there were no labs and a very light load.

Enjoy those fun days while they last. First weeks are always fun =)

Good luck new 1st years!!

There's no reason you can't have fun and party for most of the time in optometry school. Sure you'll have a few busy weeks here and there, but in my experience I've probably had just as much or more free time than I did in undergrad.

I think that might be the exception to the rule.... Certainly not my experience (and I kicked my butt in undergrad), except for maybe 2nd semester 1st year.

I think most of it had to do with the fact I had WAY less busy work to do. In undergrad it seemed like I was constantly writing a paper or doing required readings and then having to type out a bunch of answers to questions form the reading. Wasn't like that at all in optometry school. There was a lot more studying for tests, but even most of those only required a night or two of studying. But like I said, there were a few times where I would go two or three weeks studying, or practicing for proficiencies, almost nonstop. Those weeks REALLY sucked, but the rest of the time was pretty manageable.

Where are all the other first years??? Did they abandon SDN after getting that coveted acceptance letter? Or... are they already studying?:scared: 😱

We're partying it up here at ICO. The tests start next week.....

Yeah, I know what you mean about the no busy work thing. THAT is nice. I'm worried about losing my writing skills, but not so worried that I want to have a bunch of papers again. 😛

Hooray for not having the first day of school until Sept. 11!!! Two more weeks to be lazy still😉

Yuck, the first day of school. I say all school's should start after labor day. Anyway, we already had a quiz the second day of school over some of last year's materials. That really sucked. Blazenmadison, are you from Berkeley?

hello from IU,

first week into classes---hard to get used to those 8:00am ones. weekends are definately fun so far!

Well I might not be a 1st year anymore (3rd actually)
But I did examine my first real patients today!!! 😀 And never have I been more excited to be at school from 8 in the morning until 7:30pm (that was class and patients)! When I left, I couldn't stop grinning!

Good luck to all of you first years out there - stick with it - it will get tough and there will be bumps but if today is any indicator - it will be well worth it.🙂

 Yeah sco1styear!!! Real patients... right now I can't even imagine. We are currently attempting to master the art of the case history. 😴 Third year seems sooooo far away right now!

It always seemed so far away for me too...until now! 😱

It goes so much faster than you expect , though. The first two years are rough.. but the last two definitely make up for it. Externship was definitely my favorite part, though. 😎

so the first week back was great. it was nice to see all of my optobear buddies and to see the faculty/admit peoples again.

we found out that we no longer have to do a od thesis. we can still do it if we want, for research honors, but it will no longer be required for graduation. i know a few 3rd and 4th years who can't wipe the smiles off their faces!

i just want to let everyeone know how awesome the students at Cal are. it really does feel like a family. i felt so welcomed and supported, everyone (students, faculty, admid) have just been great. seeing the 2nd years made me a little sad to not be going through the program with them, but meeting all the new first years was great, i am lucky to be going through the program with them😍

we haven't gotten into the full swing of classes yet, but i already know how quickly the work will be piled on. on our first day we used the slit lamp (fun to watch everyone learn to "drive"). on wed we did slit lamp again and it was great to see my classmates that are already good drivers! today we dilated eachother and did direct opthalmoscopy. it was really neat to hear my partner so jazzed about finding my optic nerve and macula. you could hear the students around you saying "neat, cool, awesome!" it was a great day all around.

we have lectures all day on tues and thurs (8-3:30, with 2-3 hour breaks in between), and labs (w/lecture on mw) mwf (8-4, with breaks). we have 8 am lectures m-th - man it sucks to get up so early. some of my classmates also have 8 am lab on friday, those poor optobears!

good luck to everyone starting (or returning) to school! :luck:

my tablet pc is the best thing ever invented for students (okay the graphing calculator comes close!) oh my gosh it is just awesome! you guys really should think about getting one. i scanned in the preclinic manual and have downloaded all the pdf's from classes. it is so easy to use and is just awesome for studying. everything is in one spot. i can write out lectures (with a choice of 6 pens and 3 highlighters!) or i can type out lecture notes (i do type faster than i write, but so far i've only typed out books notes)

it really is the best ~1400 bucks i have ever spent on school, i can't reccommend it highly enough.

UW doesn't start till September 11.

Sadly, we're already studying. First exam at ICO is tomorrow...
It's been great so far though - we partied hard during orientation and now we're getting into study mode. I'm glad to be here in Chicago!

Good luck ICOers!!! Our first official exam doesn't come until the end of September, but then it is a couple weeks straight of exams and proficiencies (sp?). We have our first Anatomy quiz today (and yet I'm on SDN... hmmmm...) and our first mini-proficiency tomorrow on Case Histories.
