Hey guys! I have a dilemma.
I am currently a MSII DO looking to do an Anesthesiology residency and I am not sure where to rotate form my two MSIII electives. Am ultimately want to do my residency in southern California but would not mind the Midwest (Michigan,….) either. Being as competitive as it is in California, should I be realistic and do my anesthesiology rotations in the Midwest where I have a better chance of getting in or does it not matter?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I have met few to none D.O.s at California programs. I would say do a rotation in Michigan and do a good job. Yes, it's getting more competitive to find spots. I don't want to discourage you at aiming high, but being realistic, if you're not a strong candidate (Step 1 above 230) you're chances in California are less than Michigan.

Michigan is a pretty easy state to match anesthesia in my opinion, DO or not. Wayne State and Henry Ford both are fairly strong, yet easy matches. Detroit turns most people off. UMich is solid and more competitive, but still a huge program and if you've got the stats then you've got a shot. I'd say if you're going to gun for a California program then do your main rotations there, maybe throw in UMich because it's good, use Ford and Wayne as backups.
