Western C/O 2017 Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just found out I got an interview! The only options were yesterday and this Tuesday, so I guess I'll be there next Tuesday! I'm so excited, but so nervous -- I'm only 19 so I don't have a ton of interview experience in general. Congrats to everyone else who found out in the last couple of days!

Does anyone know what a waitlist email sounds like from Western? Is it just the "on hold" email?

My impression was that the "on hold" status was basically waitlisting for interviews. My guess is that a waitlist email would come after you've interviewed. I'm pretty sure you have to interview at Western to even be considered for acceptance.

:soexcited::highfive:
I also got an interview today and also was notified 2 times that I was on hold before getting the great news!
Keep you chins up, they're still sending them out! Gotta say plane tickets from NJ were not cheap but totally worth it!! See you Tuesday Rwwilliams and everybody else interviewing then!! Whoop whoop!!!

Tell me about it! It's about $800 for super cheap tickets from Florida. I'm considering making the 35 hour drive instead. Work will not be happy with me! Do you know what time your interview is at yet? Mine is 11:15 am.

Yay!!!! Congratulations HappyCows!!!! I know you've been waiting a long time for this--go knock their socks off!! Good luck! :luck:

Rwwilliams, how do you know your interview is at 11:15? My confirmation just says to plan to be there from 8am-1pm. Did you call to find out?

Nope, I lied and got too excited when I got the email apparently! It says " 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m."
The disclaimer at the bottom got me worried. I just got my US citizenship last year, so I'll have to bring all of that with me, just in case!

Well at least it'll all be fresh for you! You'll be fine. Are you really gonna drive from FL?!

I am also supposed to plan to be there from 8-1. Getting in on Monday afternoon and staying at Comfort Inn in case people are looking for hotels. That one seemed to be the best deals and a taxi ride to campus is $6.
Congrats everybody!!

And THANKS WILDOWL!!!!

Good luck everyone with the interviews!! The interviewers are super nice 🙂

I also got my interview yesterday! and the people interviewing on tues, good luck!

I'm asking my parents if they'll help with airfare, otherwise I can't really afford anything other than driving. It's worth it in the end!
Dkim909, how was your interview? Did you get to meet any current/former students?
I want to become an ACVS Diplomate after vet school so I'm wondering how many of those they've turned out and how successful they've been.

I got an interview a few days ago but I decided to decline the invitation. If anyone is still waiting to hear back, I hope you get my spot! Goodluck!

hey rwwilliams, I meant to say that I also received my interview invite yesterday haha. good luck on your interview and sorry for the confusion =/.

Congrats you guys! You are going to love it at Western. I interviewed last Tuesday and it has been said already but the interviewers are really nice and encouraging. During the campus tour they actually let us go inside the anatomy lab while live dissections were going on since I think those happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays? I thought that was really neat.

If you're wondering what the day is like, for me we started with the curriculum overview and PBL session at 11:15am, then had lunch, then went on the campus tour and had student panels and then around 3:00pm interviews started. Good luck!!

I'm so excited! One of the doctors at work gave me a huge speech about what a joke Western was and how I should go to a real school so that was a little disheartening...
I have two guests coming with me (parents), do they come along for the whole day?

Your parents can stay with you the whole time except for interviews 🙂 They can wait outside for you though! For those interviewing in the morning, there's no lunch but they provide snacks and juices and coffee!

I also got some similar responses about Western but my general understanding of them has changed since visiting and attending their Preview Day. I think they are misunderstood and there are definitely some things that are great and also not so great about the program, but I think I definitely jumped to some conclusions when I heard other vets talking about Western. I think everyone was very nice and they all seemed very happy, but they definitely stress that PBL is not for everyone. You can only tell how you feel about it after visiting! Good luck everyone!

I loved Western since I applied (didn't know anything about it until I looked into schools in general), and was so excited to get my interview invite that it was such a letdown to hear such negativity. I've been reading a blog about Western and after having NAVLE questions sent to my inbox every day for a few years, I can see why they're so successful on that exam. In the end, I'll still be a DVM and be applying for internships after four years there.

The people who bash the school are usually the ones who either 1) know nothing about it or 2) fear change. Just my 2 cents.

Love it here! Good luck everyone!:luck::luck::luck:

For sure. If your school has a 99% NAVLE passing rate and you have had a PBL system for years that other schools (Davis) are now starting to adopt I think you're doing something right!

Totally love the school. Really the only thing I wish I could change about the school was the shadiness of some of the immediate Pomona area. The view of Big Bear is incredible though.

I think it's often #1. Sometimes #2 but most jump to #1 and the vets I know did that due to Western not having a teaching hospital and also not being accredited at the time. Just my general observation.. It also seems like everyone is so happy to be there and genuinely excited about the program. I think that's what appealed to me. And the PBL session was fun!

Parts of Pomona are shady, but then there are non-shady parts (like my neighborhood) and there are also surrounding non-shady areas (Chino Hills, Claremont, etc. It's a city. Cities have a nice blend of shady and non-shady. It keeps things exciting.

Like I've said before, if anyone has any questions about the school or the program or anything, PM me. I'm happy to answer them.

As far as final decisions, during my interview on the 19th we were told that March 15th is when they will inform us. I suppose it could be sooner if they so choose but I would guess at this point that everyone will hear March 15th. Good luck to everyone!! =)

Thanks for the info! They said march 1 at my interview so I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer :/

They said they would try to shoot for March 1st at my interview too. That came directly from Karen.

I was told that it would be March 15, while at my interview on Tuesday. Also, looking through old posts on here from the c/o of 2015 and 2016, it usually comes around there.

i had students at my interview say the 15th but in the admissions talk Karen said she was going to try for march 1.

During the admissions talk I was in, Karen stated it would be the 15. This was last Tuesday, so I'm not sure if anything changed.

I loved Western...way more than I thought I was going to actually! Fingers crossed for everybody who is stuck twiddling their thumbs until SOMETIME in March! Hope I get to be classmates with some fellow SDN'ers :-D

I have a few question for current vet students: I have three dogs. What are my options for rentals? I'm very interested in the Chino HIlls area but I'm open to other options. Also, I have a horse. What are places for cheap pasture board only? He is a very easy keeper. Thanks 🙂

try looking on craigs list in the chino hills area. i board my horse in so cal but it is still pretty expensive, about 300 for grain and fed hay 2x a day ( im not a vet student yet).

I know they said at the interview that they don't "rank" us so does any current student or anyone else have a better idea of how the dean actually hand picks the class? Is the dean in contact with the interviewers to discuss the students they interviewed, etc.?

Wondering the exact same thing myself...I felt my interview went exactly how I wanted it to. I left the room wondering what exactly the dean looks for and how the ranking system works. From what I hear, the more diverse you are the better because they are looking for diversity+your common everyday vet student.

I am also curious about the housing situation if you have more than 2 pets/if you plus your future roomies have more than 2 pets. That seems to be the limit for most of the complexes in the area although I'm not sure about the privately owned houses and stuff like that.
Not trying to jinx myself by looking this stuff up before I hear back but curiosity is getting the better of me and I'm guessing there are a lot of ppl out there with the same concerns.

Thanks VetStudent123 for your input! I personally like that they don't rank us, I just wish I knew more about how the Dean made his decision..
