Western C/O 2017 Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
accepted!!!!!!!!!!

😀:naughty::laugh:😍

there's no way i can sit through my microbio test review:laugh:

YAY wildowl!!!!! Thats awesome!!!!!! 😎

I will probably turning down my spot 🙁 but I hope my seat goes to a sdner!!! I think there is some movement on the waitlist 😳 those on the waitlist dont be forlorn

Wish you could give it to meeeee 🙁 *quite forlorn*

Congrats to all those accepted!!! Waitlisters, don't give up hope! The waitlist does move...:luck:

Does anyone know how many alternate spots are given out?

I emailed Karen to ask the numbers...how many invites/rejections/alternates. I'll post when she gets back to me :/

Alternate. 🙁 Looks like I may not be attending vet school at all next year. 🙁

I feel like from what I've seen in the past, they put more people on the alternates list than the rejection list. Maybe it's just a way for them to have a large selection pool when a spot opens up. That's good and totally sucks at the same time.

I'll be probably giving up my acceptance as well! I just can't justify the financial difference between going to western and my instate, even my boyfriend who lives in los angeles says it isn't worth it. So hopefully someone on here will get it!

Congratulations Skysong on your acceptance to your instate as well as Western and thank you for your kind words to all of us waitlisters =) Does anyone know if Western waits until April 15th to see how many people decline their spot and then invite people off of the wait list? Or could it be a rolling process...as people decline, people off the waitlist get invited?

The email says they offer alternates between mid-April and August.

Congratulations to SDNers that got accepted! This is the earliest I've seen WesternU give their acceptance letters (it's usually around the middle of March).
I know that they over accept for the incoming class in anticipation that there will be people giving up their acceptances. The class size has been about 105 seats. The wait list does move and people are selected based on class diversity...so there's no rank order on the wait list pool. As far as when you can get called off the wait list, I have heard of people getting called as late as the week before the start of orientation 😱 Fingers crossed for those of you still waiting to hear/are on the wait list.

Do any current students have recommendations for books for first years? I know there was a link on the Western U web page but I can't find it again 🙁 I got my hands on Plumb's Drug Handbook, but it's only the fourth edition. Do you think that will make a huge difference?

DO NOT BUY BOOKS...YET! You will be assigned a big sib during the summer and he/she can give you some advice on which books to buy or not buy. Also, I recommend that you look at the books from the library first before investing in buying your own. WesternU does not have a required book list because you are allowed to use any (reliable) resource that is best for you (textbooks, journals, primary lit, etc).

Any current students out there want to attest to laptop standards? I know tablets aren't allowed but what about a tablet supplemented with a desktop? Are laptops essential? Any advice would be much appreciated 🙂

Oh, in the summer? Great! I just wanted to get a jump start on reading. This is the first summer I won't be in school since my freshman year of high school.

Congrats class of 2017!!! do we know when a facebook page will made? I'm so excited I can't even handle it!!!

Mailed in my official acceptance of my admission today! Whoever makes the FB page, be sure to post it here 🙂

Hi Everyone,

I also was accepted to WesternU c/o 2017! Congrats to everyone that did and good luck to all the alternates - I am SURE you will get that call!

I'm currently deciding between Western and Ross and I was wondering what you guys thought about the PBL at Western? I find it super interesting and a big selling point for Western, but I'm also a bit nervous about being thrown into a completely new teaching style. I was hoping I could get some inspiration from you guys to help make my decision - I am leaning towards Western tho! 😉

Don't worry about getting a jump start on the reading. ENJOY your summer you have worked hard to get here! and congrats!

You need a laptop for taking exams. It does not have to be fancy just needs to be able to run the exam software, open powerpoints, and open pdf files. There are many students who use tablets, iPads, etc for everything BUT exams.

I have a laptop for class but if I don't bring my laptop then good old fashioned handwritten notes work.

Congratulations to those who have been accepted! I may be a big sib for one of you this fall so just around the corner!

It was great to meet a few of you during Saturday interviews. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

I have a few question for current vet students: I have three dogs. What are my options for rentals? I'm very interested in the Chino HIlls area but I'm open to other options. Also, I have a horse. What are places for cheap pasture board only? He is a very easy keeper. Thanks 🙂

Cheap pasture board are three words that don't really exist together here...pasture board generally doesn't either. It is more common to find stall board with ZERO turnout or with very limited turnout. Pasture is a luxury unfortunately. My horse is still back east due to a combination of not being able to afford board out here and not being willing to shove my horse in a stall that long.

Officially accepted my offer! Yay WesternU Class of 2017! I cant wait to meet you all! 🙂

Hopefully there will be a facebook group soon?

Hey guys,

Just sharing the information I received from admissions. 160 offers were extended and 90 alternates......heres hoping alternate list moves :xf:

I sent my seat acceptance in on 2/25 because I was that excited!! Can't wait to meet everyone!!!!

Don't give up hope! A lot of people decline (money, other schools, other problems) and the waitlist can move! If you do plan to accept, send in your deposit ASAP, because it is first come, first served. Better safe than sorry! Waitlisters, good luck!:luck:

Thanks Marsala for the info, I'm not sure if the first come first serve was in regards to the wait listers or people who already got in but I I emailed Western to make sure. In regards to people who already got in, Lacey responded with this.

April 15th is the postmark date. You may want to clarify on Student Doctor, it is not first come first serve. Anyone who was offered a seat and sends in their deposit on time are in the class.

Once your deposit is received by Jeanene White, you will receive an e-mail. Your deposit will not be cashed until after April 15th.

Best Wishes,

Afternoon, Future DVMs!

Please remember that AAVMC requires all participating institutions to not require a decision from accepted students prior to April 15th. AAVMC has a policy regarding the deadline and asks that students pressured to respond before the deadline to contact the Association. We will not cash your deposit until close of business on April 15, 2013. After 5:00 p.m. PDT the tuition deposit may no longer be returned to you should you chose to withdraw. As explained in our accept letter, "The CVM routinely issues invitations to more candidates than seats allotted. This is in response to the common practice of applicants applying to multiple institutions. In the unprecedented event that the number of acceptances significantly exceeds the College’s resources, confirmation of your seat will be provided after receipt of your written acceptance and deposit on a first come first served basis after April 16, 2013. Therefore, you are encouraged to make your decision and secure your seat in the class as soon as possible." You are encouraged, not required. We have never in the history of the college seen the number of acceptances exceed the College's resources. The College is prepared to address that issue if it arises.

For those in the alternate pool, there is still a possibility that you may be offered a seat in the class. I can tell you that no offers will be sent out prior to the April 15th deadline. After the deadline has passed the College will assess how many seats, if any, are available. If there are seats available, the College will review the candidates in the alternate pool and select candidates to fill the open seats. This will continue until the Friday of orientation week (August 9th).

Please do not hesitate to e-mail your admissions counselor or myself with any questions!

Does anyone know how alternates are notified if they're offered a position?

Just wondering because I'll be out of the country from April 15-30 and won't be able to accept calls. Would they give my spot to the next person if I can't accept right away?

Any WesternU 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year students monitoring this forum have any input on job prospects/how you will pay off your debt and how much debt you are looking at dealing with? My parents are pretty anxious about the amount of debt I will be incurring over the next 4 years and it would really help them feel better to hear that Western students have job prospects and are going to be able to pay off loans.

I know I'm not really interested in companion animal or equine if that makes a difference.

Would really appreciate any feedback and I'm planning to talk to Financial Aid on Monday. Sorry to be the Debbie Downer worrying about money already but I'm just trying to be realistic and prepare myself/console my parents lol.

I'm in the same boat as you! Hoping to qualify for the $40,500 Stafford loan but I'm wondering where I'll get the extra from. Being 19 hasn't given me much time to accrue much credit on my own so hopefully having my parents cosign on a private loan will help me out.
I've been looking into IBR a lot. I want to be an ACVS Diplomate which means 1-2 years of internship after vet school making next to nothing ($20,000/yr) so I'm hoping the "demonstrating partial financial hardship" requirement will be easy to satisfy. The hard part is finding a loan, other than the Stafford, that qualifies for IBR.

I have had an in depth discussion with a 2010 graduate and a 2012 graduate. The 2012 graduate is very frustrated, he has been hired and making $60k a year which is decent but the amount he gives back for his loans is strenuous on him. He talks about how his human doctor friends are able to pay off their loans in a handful of years but vets may not be able to pay off their loans in 20+ years. The 2010 graduate is making about $95k a year and part of that gov based program where you only have to pay a small portion of your loans back. They are both small animal vets.

In all honesty, I try not to read too much about the student loan situation because it's extremely frustrating.

Try the Grad Plus loan first. You just can't have an adverse credit history, meaning defaults etc. I have private student loans and they don't play by the same rules as federal loans sometimes. They also charge alot of interest.

Is there an unofficial facebook page out there for Western students?

At this point, I think it's a better idea to read up on the information and educate yourself as much about your future as you can, rather than ignore the issues and be unprepared when you graduate.

I'm interested in knowing this as well, since I'm planning on applying to Western (first choice) this summer. Would love to learn as much as I can from current Western students. 🙂

I have no problem with reading about scholarships as well as discussing with graduates as to what to expect upon graduation. I am speaking in regards to the dozens and dozens of depressing articles about how veterinary medicine doesnt make sense 'financially' due to the student loan situation.

I requested to join! Can't wait to get to know my future classmates 🙂

To any upperclassmen, I know the IPE class is a requirement for first years; how many of you still talk to students in the different colleges? Just out of curiosity 🙂

Most of the people I know or spend time with are in the CVM but I do have friends in the dental school. There are some gatherings which are open to all colleges (not a school related function) that you have the potential to meet people from the others.

Just sent my deposit today and asked to join the Facebook group...guess that's as official as it gets!

I sent my yesterday! And also requested to join just now =)

I've started researching where to live next year and I've kind of come to the conclusion that it'll be Chino or Claremont. I visited Claremont when I was in town for my interview, but that was it. Can any of you explain any significant differences from one to the other? I liked Claremont's small town feel, as compared to where I live now! Not sure how "small town" it actually is, since I've always lived in or near a city.

To me, Claremont is faux 'small-town'/hipsterville. I lived in an actual small town. Chino has a very large Asian population. I love 99 Ranch Market! Both are nice, safe areas. Claremont is expensive (from what my classmates tell me). I know a few horse people that live in Chino. I'm ok with saying I live in Pomona. I live in a nice neighborhood (they exist), I walk to school (don't have to pay for a parking pass!), and I got my house for a screamin' deal.

LilWickedJester, I think you're about due for a 'pep' talk!:naughty:😉👍
