Congratulation to all who have got accepted to dental school this cycle and good luck to thoes who are still currently waiting for a response.

So my question is this... I got accepted to western university of dental medicine in california which is where i am from. I would like to stay in california and at this point it was my only interview to date ( have two upcoming in jan. NOVA and UNLV). So, being that it is still a very new school and having an extremely large price tag i am some what questioning whether i should worry and use it as a fallback school or just check out my options and go from there.

What do you guys think... about the school? the price tag (which states it is over $88,000 after expenses, and tuition alone is $55,710.00.)? Dont get me wrong everyone, i am so happy to be acccepted and will most likely go to this school if it is my only acceptance, but i am just a little overwhelmed with the fact that it will only be the 3rd year open and they dont have a graduating class yet and the very high tuition.

Thanks for your two cents

It is accredited already, so you will be graduating with the same degree status as anyone else graduating from a "newer" school. I don't think it is anything to worry about. The school has all brand new equipment, and I bet the education is well worth it.

How did you feel about the program when you visited? Can you see yourself being happy there? I think it is great that you are taking a hard look about the amount of debt you will be incurring when you start school. Nova is ~ $1000 cheaper a year than Western so tuition is basically the same. UNLV is ~$5000 cheaper a year than Western so that difference would add up. Of course, you really don't have to make a decision yet especially if your interviews are before January 25th since you only have 1 acceptance anyways. Tuition wasn't a huge deal for me because Western was still cheaper than the other 2 schools I got accepted to but I am of the opinion you can never have too many options so keep an open mind. As for the school not graduating anyone yet, I wouldn't worry too much about it since it has its initial accreditation and the chances of them having problems with the final accreditation are low. Hope that helps.

Thanks, appreciate it a ton. All information is good information, especially thoes who are attending Western.

I Am a Dental student at western University and actually intervewed at both Nova and UNLV as well as multiple other schools. When I first added western to my list of schools to apply to, I didn't know a lot about them and I almost added the school as an afterthought. Luckily for me they were my last interview, so I had a good comparison to make. It didn't take long for me to realize there was something very different about western University's philosophy on Dental education. The school rose to number 1 on my list in a hurry. I don't want to get wordy on this but the Dental school and faculty are amazing and if you choose westernu you will not regret it. The 1st year curriculum Is really tough, but who expects dental school to be easy anyway? I am very glad I chose to come here and look forward to seeing the program only get better and better with time.

I'm pretty curious about this school myself (plan to apply this coming summer). I know you don't want to get wordy, but it would be great to hear some of that wordiness regarding your thoughts and impressions of the school, especially why it rose to #1 for you (compared to which schools?) and what made it so very different in its philosophy toward dental education?

Thanks

Howdy, I know this question was directed at Phlemfish but I had a similar experience so I thought I would share it. To be honest, I didn't know a lot about Western when I applied but it was relatively close to where my wife and I were from so I applied there. I interviewed at Indiana, Louisville, Tufts, BU and Western and turned down an interview at NYU. After interviewing at Western it became my top choice. I liked all the other schools and they all have things going for them but I really wanted an acceptance to Western. They were really community-oriented and the faculty and facilities were really nice blah blah blah but the feeling and goals of the school resonated with me. There are challenges in going to a new school but it is really cool to be able to have a say in improving the curriculum etc. This is definitely a school where you can improve it with your thoughts and suggestions because the faculty really does listen. Plus, the adcoms do a good job in selecting candidates that work well together. The D2's seem really close and I know my classmates are all pretty close too.

As far as applying to this school goes, does anyone know how OOS friendly it is? I really want to try my hand at a california school that isn't named UCLA or USC.

Anybody else notice that many accepted students on here can't put together a correct sentence? Even when there's spellcheck. This tends to be the most annoying thing about being waitlisted.

Western isn't a public school, so there's no in-state or out of state designation. I interviewed and was accepted there, and it is an awesome school. I ended up going with my state school because of cost of reputation, but in my opinion, Western seems like a great school and I think they'll build up an outstanding reputation.

Haha easy does it. Be patient and stay positive, I know you are keeping your fingers crossed for OHSU.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds great, though I think I'll have to interview myself to totally comprehend some of the awe and intrigue. I like the idea of being a part of growing program, and the tightness of the class is definitely a huge plus. How big is the class by the way? This is one of the turn-offs of NYU for me, the massive class size, where I'm sure you end up with micro-cliques, and the staff+student relations are probably not as well developed.

Dont hate the player hate the game. Actually, dont have the accepted, hate the committee. People come on here for support, not criticism. And if you were refering to me personally i post from my work computer which doesnt have spell check and i sometimes dont have all the free time in the world ( because i am working) to go back and spell/grammer check my entire post.

So, next time you post some negativity realize that people will read it and may not share the same bad attitude you share. So two sticks for you...👍

The D2 class size is currently 65 people, and I think the D1s have somewhere in the mid-70s. It's really great because the dental faculty know us by name and they remember details about us (where we went to school/where we're from/that our grandmother was sick/etc). It's nice to have that more personal touch at school. Makes it all easier to deal with I think. The only time we have a large class is with the basic sciences. We take them with the DO students, so there's about 300 in those lectures. I never felt like it was a problem though. We all intermingle (at least the 2nd years do, I guess I shouldn't speak for the first years haha - what's the word, Spud Daddy?). I like the class size - big enough that you don't get on each other's nerves, small enough that everyone knows everyone.

Nice. I'm not "hating" on anybody. Mainly embarassed. Congrats on the acceptance though. Looks like I'll have an easy time with the writing sample there in a couple weeks.

Haha, you're correct. I've heard great things about Western and I can't wait to interview there. See you guys soon.

well played. Not new but just get annoyed with disrespecting people. Good looking out.
Back to the topic at hand. Western looked like a great school, my main point of this thread was to get insider information and let people know about the school. Not troll the site.

I think our faculty is dedicated to see us succeed. Our program is not perfect and has its bumps. On the dental side of things I think our class is going at a good pace in terms of being ready for the national boards. So far I have not encountered any demeaning professors. Our dental faculty come from a variety of backgrounds and each have their own tips and techniques when we are in sim lab. On the academic side, sometimes it may seem a bit overkill. Some of our lectures are more specific for DO's but most of them will prepare us well for the boards.
