I just set up a pre-secondary interview with western for march. i know they say that letters and secondary should be in b4 u interview, but how strictly do they adhere to this policy? will they simply cancel your interview if your stuff hasnt arrived by a certain time? i am wondering because my DO letter writer seems to be lagging- i know he still has 2 months but i just wanted to be sure.

anyone who has interviewed at western have any pointers? did u guys stay with a student host? also i saw on some other thread that the acceptance rate for students that interview is somewhere around 90%! is that some crazy rumor?

I don't know anything about Western, but at the other schools that I interviewed at they review your file when you get there to make sure everything is complete. If you are not complete, I am sure they will interview you, but they will make you wait on a decision until your file is completed. You have plenty of time, so make sure you get everything in. Just nicely let your letter writer know that you have an interview on that date and that if they could get the letter in by then, you would really appreciate it. GOOD LUCK!:luck:

i don't know about the rumor... but i did interview at western and received an acceptance. for hotels, i suggest shilo inn (not the suites). i believe their number is in the email that they send you confirming your interview. when i was there, i met a lot of other applicants at the hotel, so you're not alone.
they will not cancel your interview if you have some things missing. at least they didn't for the people there with incomplete applications. they simply talk to you when you get there. i think they interview you and put your application on hold until it is complete.
as for the interview, i have to say, for me, it was the toughest one. i got a lot of difficult ethical questions about my researches. if you go to the sdn interview feedback and look at the questions there, it's a good place to start your preparation.
my advice is just relax. though some questions may be difficult, they want to see you think on your feet and i'm sure you'll do well.

goodluck to you =)

1) You can bring your letters and secondary to your interview and give it to them if you haven't already. Obviously that means they won't cancel the interview if you haven't turned the stuff in.

2) When I interviewed last year, I just drove from home (about an hour away) because I live in the area. If you don't, check out the student host list they give you or stay at the Shilo Inn, its about the closest decent place to stay.

3) The acceptance rate for people who interview is around 90% hopefully that will ease some of the anxiety going into the interview (although I know it won't)

4) COMP sends rejection letters and acceptance letters in the same, small thin envelope so don't freak out if you get one and think its a rejection letter (although there is a small chance that it may be)

5) If you are accepted but waitlisted, the waitlist moves pretty fast starting around June. Almost everyone I know who was waitlisted eventually got in.

I hope your questions were answered, feel free to ask again if you think of others.

hey, Cyclohexanol,

You said the waitlist of Western was a pretty good chance for acceptance. How many waitlist people you knew that had gotten in?

I would also suggest the Shilo Inn. It is cheap, and only about a 10 minute drive to Western.

My interview at Western was very very laid back. I was the last one in my group to interview, and it started about 30 minutes late. I got to sit in the waiting room all by myself, and let the nerves build. But, there was really nothing to be nervous about. It was one on one, and my interviewer was very complimentary of my application (and no I am a 3.8 gpa, 35 MCATER). Just relax and have fun, it goes by very quickly.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

How is it that you have a pre-secondary interview?
My secondary has been complete for a while, and I have not received an invite. 🙁

Apparently some students get pre-secondary interview and some post-secondary interivew. I'm not sure why that is or what that means. I also got a pre-secondary interview at Western but that was back in November. I remember some other interviewees recieved post-secondary interviews, so nothing to worry about.

Hey, I have a quick question....The AACOMAS deadline for Western is April 15, but on the website FAQ it says:

How does the committee decide which applicants are offered seats?

The admissions committee reviews all completed applications and selects 500 of the most qualified candidates for interview taking into consideration such criteria as GPA, MCAT scores, clinical experience, leadership roles, knowledge of osteopathic medicine, and community service. Interviews and acceptances are offered on a rolling basis from September through March/April. Applicants are kept informed of their status by mail

So are AACOMAS applications after that for the next application cycle, WL, or what? Just a little confused..thanks

Is there any proof on this?

It's a widely circulated rumor, therefore it is valid. That is the rule for rumors. If it were less circulated, it would obviously be false.

Sarcasm aside...

I don't know of any written published statistics that support this claim, but it seems to have been verified by various people. I think I heard it first from my pre-med advisor who may have proper acceptance statistics.

Based on the published statistics, they interviewed 645 applicants for c/o 2010 and our class has like 219 students or something. If the number of acceptances equaled the number of students in class (which we know isn't reality) the acceptance rate for those interviewed would be around 34% but we all know that they accept many more who take other offers, therefore increasing the percent maybe to 90%, maybe not. It isn't completely unfathomable to believe that as much as 90% of those interviewed are accepted. Again based on published statistics that would mean something like 580 acceptances are given out.

Since we lack the actual acceptance data how about for now, we just redefine 90% as "really good chance" and say if you are interviewed you have a "really good chance" of being accepted.

These numbers include those that were waitlisted and then accepted as well, correct?

I visited Western in June of 2005 and they were still accepting applications for the incoming class of 2005! I don't actually know how strict their deadline is currently, but I imagine that they keep interviewing beyond the April deadline to fill the class.
