Yikers, hopefully I get an invite, nerveracking!!

Hi guys,
Can someone tell me which airport is close to WesternU??? Tks!

Thanks Antiviralsrule!
By the way, has anyone received a confirmation email from Western after a phone call for interview invitation yet? Cuz the woman who called for me last Wednesday said that after 2 or 3 days, Western will send an email and then a mail to students to confirm about the interview day but up to now, I still haven't received anything???

I did canceled my application. They require molecular of cell to fulfill 6 credits of biochemistry which I took biochem for 3 credits. I asked them substitute molecular of cell by molecular cell biology but they don't allow😕. What else I can do besides canceling. I think they are not flexible in courses. Some courses are similar but they don't accept.

I had to withdraw my application as well. I feel that Western is one of the most rigid and unwavering schools in terms of prerequisites, and I think the way that they don't have a set standard of prereqs (ie: depending on which school you attend, you may have to take more classes than another applicant) is pretty unreasonable. I'm sorry about your cancellation, but I would suggest focusing your efforts on another school at this point.

why are you cancelling yours? i thought all UC's bio curriculum should be able to cover their prereqs pretty well.

Finally got my call for an invite this morning...12/12 at 0730.

See you there. 🙂

I'm missing three prerequisites, although I was originally only missing one, anatomy, which I was going to take at a community college.

They wouldn't accept my molecular bio + biochem as satisfying the biochem prereq even though their website says they do. They also required that I take an additional chemistry lab, even though I already took general chem lab and the full sequence of general chem, simply because I went to UCSD. At that point it was kind of like they were finding reasons for me not to go, so I just decided to withdraw.

same exact thing happened to me. its bs. last year i was able to apply with all my prereqs finished. this year, they would not accept mole bio and i basically am out 100 bux from applying to pharmcas and the supplemental fee for western.

for those of you who didnt fulfill because you have mole bio.. realize that i applied last year and it was okay... this year it was not okay.

Hey guys, did Western notify you guys that your pre-req has not been satisfy?

Hey guys, did Western notify you guys that your pre-req has not been satisfy?

they let me know a long time ago... around sept/october. they basically said you need to show proof before nov 2nd that you can finish the prereqs before the fall semester....

i emailed them back to ask about the mole bio situation and they never got back to me, then nov 2nd passed and i said forget it this is crap.

I have no problem with the biochem requirement since I am a biochem major, I just had to finish the whole year of biochem series, but I do not like the their physiology requirement...
I go to UCSB, they offer Physio but not the lab so therefore the only way to take it is through CC. I will be ending up taking 12 units from UCSB and 8 units from community college both physio and speech next semester/quarter...it's gonna be horrible

Anyone applying from UCD having this same pre-req problem?

I'm applying from UCD. I took the ABI series to fulfill the biochem requirement and it worked fine for me; they accepted it and everything. The only thing I have left is upper division english.

Checking my phone every two minutes. This is not healthy. :scared:

I was accepted by a school instate, so it's not a nightmare for me. However, I feel it's ridiculous. It wasted my time and my money😡

I had a lot of problems with prereqs as well. I thought it was just me and I am really surprised to see that a lot of you had problems as well. Its awful to hear that some of you canceled your applications because of a few prereqs. I feel that Western is preventing a lot of great students from gaining admissions with these policies.

I went to UC Santa Cruz and I felt like I had to battle with admissions people for months to figure this all out. Like some of you said they say on their website that they will accept a molecular bio course in place of a second biochem course. They wouldn't accept my eukaryotic molecular bio course because they said it needed to be a "general" course not only euk... ok... but then after going back and forth they found that they will accept Cellular and molecular bio.. which is an underdivision course and actually they first bio class I ever took... kinda of random but I was happy for that.

Also they initially said they wouldn't accept either of the writing classes that I had taken at UCSC. I couldn't believe it. After tons of phone calls and getting high up people from articulation at UCSC involved they finally said they would accept both courses.. at this point it had already been months and I had already taken a writing class at a CC. ... crazyness.. but it all worked out in the end... I am still glad I went through all the stress of this because I really like Western and if I get admitted it will all be worth it.

So advice to you guys who have had problems with it. Don't give up.. Call people, don't email, it just gives them more time to delay with a response. And get your school involved, when I contacted people at UCSC to let them know my basic classes weren't transfering, they were shocked and worked hard to help me.

Good luck everyone!

Btw, whats that ladies name again who called us for the interviews guys?!!🙄

By "accepted it and everything," do you mean that they offered you an interview invitation? I took the BIS series so I'm not sure if that will suffice. I could have sworn I had called the admissions counselor when I was working on the application though, and she had approved of the courses I told her I had taken. Hmm..

Hey guys,
I am a current WesternU student. I just want to congratulate those who got invited for an interview. For those who didn't, keep your hopes up. Western does 4+ interview sessisons and sometimes it's even easier to get accepted if you had a later interview. A good amount of people who interview in December are placed on hold, which means they don't tell you if they will accept you or reject you for couple of month until they have interviewed more students.

Some tips that i'd like to give: Try to sound original and sincere. Yeah, we all know that you want to help people and save lives.

Try to stay calm and don't panic. I have not really heard anyone be asked anything tricky, like the mechanism of action of Lipitor. Practice the questions in the sdn interview section. Get a good night of sleep.

Good Luck. All of you will do well. 🙂

if you want to know if your biochemistry or other prereqs are approved by western click here and search for your school.

Thanks KMIMSM, is that still valid for this fall? Did you double check with western? because there ppl who have to withdraw their apps because this year western doesn't approve to replace Biochem 2 with Molecular Bio???🙁

Thanks a lot for your advice,
can you please clear for us about the biochemistry prequisites? Will the school accept molecular bio replace for biochem 2?

I just checked the biochem pre-requisite for my school. Only Cell Biology would substitute the second biochem course, wth it really doesn't make too much sense...cell bio is not molecular bio. I guess for those have problem with the biochem pre-requisite, it doesn't hurt to take an extra course in biochem cuz it probably will help you in once you are in pharm school.

Your first step would be to check the website that's listed in the thread. If the class that's is not listed, you may call/email the school about them possibly accepting it. I fulfilled that requirement with biochem 1 + mol bio and that option is still available on the website from my undergrad school.

PS: the last thing that you want to do is have a question of that magnitude and importance answered by some poster. No matter how trustworthy you think he/she is.

I heard USC and several other schools teach biochem in the first yr. Western doesn't at all. To be honest, i didn't learn or remember anything from my biochem class. It didn't hurt me one bit. So, i would just fulfill those reqs any way that you can.

Thank you 🙂

I got a phone call for an interview today. For Dec 12th! yay! Do you guys know is this the first interview date? Congrats to everyone!

😀
Have you received an email to confirm the interview invitation after a phone call yet???

I also got a phone call yesterday and scheduled an interview on 12/12 at 7:30am. But I haven't yet received the confirmation email with all the details that they said they will send...

I haven't yet seen anyone post about this year's interview experience.

For those who interviewed already (and particularly for those who were accepted), can you please detail what the experience was like?

What questions did they ask you?

What was the on-site essay like? What topic(s) did they ask about?

Any other details would be great to know. I am particularly concerned about the on-site essay, so if you could provide as much detail as possible about that part of the interview, I would be most grateful.

Thanks guys! Hope to see you in September 🙂

*** ! after that 4 pages of supplemental essay they still require an on-site essay, too? 🙄

hey practice NOT saying God's name in vain. you are applying to Loma Linda arn't you?? I hear they don't like that. imagine saying that during interviews lol.

lol, that's true...the pastor always says not to use God's name in vain

does anyone know the other interview dates? :/ like, if Western hasn't contacted you by now is that basically a rejection.
There are several more interview dates! The last one is usually in the April/May months, so some may not hear from Western until a week or so before that interview. Don't give up hope if you can't go to the December interview. There are a lot more chances! 😀

couldn't you guys just take the second semester of Biochem to meet the pre-req... since you have already taken 1 semester?

No one has been accepted or has even been to the interview at Western yet... given that the first interview is on 12/12... and I don't think it would be cool to post the exact questions on here!

For those who got an interview, when did you send in your supplementals? thanks

we could. but when every other school in CA will take just one quarter, or one with mole bio, then id rather just go elsewhere.

its also hard to find CC's that will offer biochem2. I don't know about the other people, but I graduated so if I wanted to go back and take another quarter of biochem at UCSD, id have to reapply.

besides... im working full time now so i don't have the time for a class.

for those with biology/chemistry/science degrees wouldn't you have automatically fulfilled biochemistry and molecular biology esp if you graduated from a UC or even cal states.
