I just received a notice in the mail from COMP, all first year DO students will be socked with a $1,250 mandatory computer fee.

Am I the only prospective student who did not hear of this until now?

I called the school for more information and found that they will be, "leasing laptops for our convience." I just bought a laptop for med school!!!!

Does anyone else think this in an unreasonable fee to be subjected to, especially when they only inform us two months before school starts?

Bevo

I am not surprised!!! They will do things like that....often! Laptop fees?? We never had to & I am trying to think as to why? maybe for notes??

Check with the school if they still charge you for a curriculum fee b/c that is supposed to be the fee that provides you with notes.

Hmmm...very interesting!!!!

Is this fee for ALL first year students? Or just the students at Western U?

Thanks

I was suprised that I have to spend more than a thousand dollar for computer fee. This is such a rib off because anybody can buy a brand new labtop with that much money. I believe the fee affect to first year DO and PharmD students.

I would rather pay $500 in lab/computer fees and buy my own laptop. I dont want WUCOMP buying me a cheapo 20lb laptop, when I'm willing to shell some more $$ out and get an awesome one. I know enough about computers (most of us here do) to configure/install/whatever they need us to. Oh well...

There has been talk about this when I was a first year & the possibilty of it affecting our class. I didn't like this idea for a couple of reasons:

1) If I am not mistaken, each student is still required to pay a curriculum fee ($400, I believe) & that is suppose to pay for your printed notes handed out in class.

2)Now you have to pay a laptop fee for a laptop which main purpose is to do the same thing...get the notes out to the students. What if they still charge you a curriculum fee as well? Now what's that used for? Check if that is also part of you payment

The PharmD students are currently doing this laptop idea & they get their notes that way. That new computer lab mentioned will probably not be ready for your useage (class of 2004) until god knows when so don't bet on it!

Currently, the problem is there are ONLY 2 laser printers on-campus & everyday you see PharmD students printing out copious amounts of notes by the minute. I feel for them b/c it is truly a hassle and they still pay a curriculum fee as well. Oh, you also have to purchase your own paper! What is that all about? Hmmm....looks like milking to me!!

Can you now imagine DO & PharmDs fighting over 2 laser printers nest school year? Good luck guys!! You all might as well think about finding other printing methods NOW! The old style of entering class & the packet of notes are there for you to pick up are much better.

You guys have got to understand what you are being charged for b/c my 2 years there have thought me that NOT everything is pro-student! Believe me!!! Make sure you inquire...

PB-
Where did you get the info that they buy us a laptop? I called Western yesterday and was told that we are essentially leasing a laptop for 2 years and then return it (granted the person I spoke with didn't seem entirely confident that she knew what she was talking about!) If we do get to keep it, then the fee is a little easier to swallow. But they're telling me that the $1250 is for leasing and IT support, hardware, software, etc. BTW- is anyone else annoyed that this fee has never been mentioned. For me it came out of the blue. It wouldn't have affected my choosing Western, but it would have been nice to know!

I am happy to see that I am not the only one who thinks this is a sham.

This fee is a rip off in my opinion. I am in the process of contacting the school to get info about this, when I hear back from COMP, I will post what they told me.
But what I know already is that we will not own these computers, they are for our use...the school is leasing them for us-oh gee, how nice of them.

Part of the fee will cover tech support and software, but some of us might not need it. Even if the school is going to network the computers, I can't see how this is necessary. And what happens if the computer is lost or stolen?

P.S. I am still excited to meet all of you though.

Howdy,

At the risk of putting my head on the chopping block, here goes:

The fee is indeed mandatory (doh!). Undoubtedly, many, especially those who
already have a laptop or have their eye on a perty little number will
exclaim, ?WTF?!?

Here?s the thinking at Western U:

1) The curriculum at Western U is going all (yes, 100%) electronic,
eventually. Thus, the academic powers that be declared that laptops are
mandatory?like Anatomy is mandatory. For some, it sucks. For others, just
another requirement.
2) We need to be brought up to speed on how to use the computers themselves,
the network, and the internet?BTW we have a T-3 on the way?that is 15 Mb
(yes, fifteen mind-blowing mega bits/sec)?connection to the internet. The
only way to ride the T-3 is through the Cat-5 cable that will connect the
said laptops to the multitude of jacks at the university. It?s nice to surf
Newport Beach, but you can surf it up here ;0).
3) So what? Why do we have to lease computers from the school, moreover
standardized ones? The reason for this is that in the past, the school
?allowed? (hey, we?re all adults) many other laptops, and some students
bought laptops different than those. Given those permutations of types of
systems, the IT Department simply could not support the users when their
systems would crash. The reason being that it is nearly impossible to
maintain a drivers data base for every single user?many users don?t even
know what drivers are? And the IT Department would get as frustrated as the
users?user support people like to?.uh?..support people, but given the above
were impotent to do so (regardless of the recent release of sildenafil).
4) It stands to reason that if a computer breaks, and that if they are now
all of the same, that they are now interchangable and easy to fix. But, it
gets better: Those of you fortunate enough to own a Lexus know that if the
thing breaks down you get a loaner until your car is fixed. Well, although
I admit that we are paying for that service, we get Lexus treatment if our
laptop croaks?we get a loaner equivalent until ours is fixed.
5) Keep in mind that the academic committees made this decision, believing
that this was what was best for the students, the institution, and the
profession as a whole. Computers are here, they are great tools, and, if
the students of WesternU use those tools, then they may just become
competent leaders in medicine of the digital age.

Okay, now for the specs, for all of you Road and Track types:

Celeron 500 (for most apps as fast as PIII, but way less power consumption)
64 MB RAM
12.1? SVGA (800x600)?the 14? model was REALLY expensive
4MB video RAM
6GB HD
24x10X CDR
10/100 Network card (can you say surf that 15Mb/s connection?i.e. BIG surf?)
56K modem for when the surf is low (i.e. at home)
5.9-6.3lbs. (with/without CDR)

Oh yea, the Operating System will be Windows 98, because, after all, Quake
III runs fastest on this system. But the official policy is that the
surfing is not for Quake ;0).

I hope that this answers some questions, and that future frustrations will
be taken out on war criminals.

Seriously, IT is here to help, and they?re working to help you understand
what is up, and how to use what is here.

Sincerely,

The Insider

Insider- I appreciate the info and your sesitivity to the issues involved from the student's perspective. I wonder-is a discounted purchase of the laptop after the 2 years is a possiblity? If not, how do we continue to access the information in the curriculum after retuning the dang thing? Are we left out in the cold when it comes to clinical years? Again, I much appreciate any info you have. Thanks!

Also- why did we not hear about this at any point before now? I attended OMAC in Nov. 98, interviewed Sept. 99, have had constant contact with the school- and never a word about this! If you are in a position to pass along the message, the administration should be aware that "dropping" fee bombs like this is not appreciated.

This said, I have been very excited about starting at Western this fall and this in no way decreases that excitement.

More info:

Indeed, after two years we will have to turn in our laptops, but will then get a new one at a tentatively similar lease price at that time. Then, at the end of the fourth year we should/may have the option of purchasing them at a reduced cost.

If you check out IBM?s site, you will see that the said laptops run about $300/year cheaper through IBM directly. However, I don?t think that the ?Lexus treatment? (see previous post for explanation of the over-extended metaphor) applies through IBM. That is, the IT team is here to help, and we?re paying about $300/year for that service?I think, but don?t quote me on that.

As far as ?the bomb? goes, I agree that it is frustrating. The semi-official story is that Western U made this official decision late in the game (clich?), and didn?t want to incorrectly inflate the price of going to Western U before all of the chicks were hatched (another clich?). I think the major frustration is the nickel and diming (yet another clich??I?m on a roll?that?s another?) nature of the fees. Hey, if it were some other private MD schools, it would be $40K plus, just for tuition alone. So, we may want to lobby the administration to include this, up front and early, to the next class, to avoid such frustration. (clich? total in one paragraph = 4)

Again, I encourage taking the frustration out on war criminals, or Pokemon dolls?its your choice.

Yours truly,

The Insider?following the White Rabbit

Shelf:

Your info is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time and effort to post the news.

Well, it's T-7 days for me, guys. ISAC starts next Friday. I'll see the rest of you in August (or end of July for the Welcome Weekend).

Take care!

Thanks for the info shelf!

One concern I have is that in order to prevent theft, we have to keep an eye on our laptops at all times- like when we're in the library. Unless this fee comes w/ zero deductible theft protection (probably wishful thinking).

Just want to get this straight- so would most of our notes be downloaded via the internet? I wouldn't want to lug a laptop on top of books and notes.

hey our topic is "en fuego."

Thanks Shelf, I am still waiting to hear from the school. Your info helps alot though.
I appreciate what the school is doing, anything to sharped our skills in medicine and general technology is great. I'm just a little miffed that the school didn't mention this sooner...I made a serious purchase and now don't really need the computer I bought.
If we have a leased computer for the next four years, the one I own now will be obsolete by the time I need it again.

Hey, does anybody want to buy an Dell Inspiron 3500?

See y'all soon!

Hey,

You're welcome. But, to keep my geek capital, my name is Insider (you know, like Neo or Trinity-hehe, jk).

BTW, check out bb.www.westernu.edu. This is WesternU's home grown (and growing) Black Board interface--a way for paper driven profs to post things on the INTRA (Inter is a problem, copyright--see Metallica versus Napster and get the general drift) net.

Right now the user list--that is all of the students, needs to be created. So, I got IT to create a discussion board using a generic, annonymous logon. The generic login for this is the following:

username: laptop
password: laptop

Go to the course called Discussion forum. Then, on the left you will see a navigation set of buttons (snazzy, eh?). Click on Communication. Then, on the right side of the screen click on the Discussion Board icon. Next, click on DO notebooks--and away you go. Don't let all the verbiage scare you--its quite intuitive (BTW, this will be the interface upon which WesternU will be building its so called e-curriculum. There will be growing pains, but, in the immortal words of one E. Cartman--"Kick _ss!"

I have had IT allow me to copy over some of the comments from Student Doctor--a hacked up job, but enough info to get the basics. I also posted my long winded (although I wasn't speaking, so how is that expression applicable?) posts.

So, hopefully this will be a place where we can start to familiarize ourselves with the interface and continue the discussion. More advancements are to come rapidly, I've been told--especially for those with intranet connections (can you say ISAC?).

Remember--bb.www.westernu.edu,
and, since it is essentially an annonymous login, sign your name to your post if you wish to be recognized for your comments ;0).

TTFN,

Insider

Sorry,

It's bb.westernu.edu

Note, no WWW--I just get so used to saying that--or typing it in this case...
