WesternU/COMP class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, I'm a 2nd year student at COMP. Many of the people in my class bring their lunches to school. We have numerous refrigerators to store your lunch and microwaves if you need to heat something up. Alternatively there are numerous fast food restraunts nearby. . . with Subway probably being the most popular because it is the closest to walk to.

A new 2nd year face.....hmmm???

hey npdoc 28. My wife and I are hoping to buy either a house or a condo. We're currently ~30 miles east of Pomona and may stay in this area, but are looking down there - maybe Philips Ranch area. Shoot me an email if you wanna chat about it - I only cruise by this site every once in a great while.

Hey Melancholy - how did you upload your own image in place of the stock AVATARS ????

Hey Doc Jay,

The way I did my avatar was to link it to a picture that is already existing on the internet somewhere. That seems to be the only way you can use a non-stock avatar. Just find a picture on the internet, right-click on it and select properties to get the html address of the picture. Insert that into your profile and hopefully it'll work!

As far as eating during lunch, I don't bring my food that often for various reasons (too lazy, too tired, haven't grocery shopped in ages, not enough time, etc.)

-The Subway at the end of campus also has a little pizza place inside it that offers some cheap pizza if you're craving that.

- Within 4-5 minutes walking down to Mission Blvd, you have Weinerschnitzel, Taco Bell, KFC, and some fast-food Chinese place as well as a handful of mom and pop places that i've never tried yet.

- Walking up to Holt Blvd which might take more like 10 minutes, there are more Mexican restaurants, El Pollo Loco, and Jack-in-the-Box.

- If you want to drive, anywhere from 5-12 minutes there is a Church's Chicken, Popeye's, Burger King, Yoshinoya, In and Out, and a wider variety of local ethnic foods (Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, etc.)

Can't you tell I eat out every now and then?

Here's a pretty good and encouraging news for COMP class of 2006 to know. There is one thread titled "School Performance on COMLEX". COMP ties for 5th best among all DO schools for the highest COMLEX passage rate. It's a good read. Here's the link:

School Performance on COMLEX

melancholy,

thank you for explaining all the fast-food places near COMP's campus. i too love those places, and it's good to know there are places to eat nearby.

JJ

P.S. Has anyone heard of Copperwood Apts. in Chino? We are about to give our 30 days notice here and a little feedback would make me feel a little better. thanks.

Wish I were around to see the ISAC'ers on Friday, but I probably missed them if they weren't the folks walking around campus looking pretty happy to be out in the sun heh.

I must say that the Village around Claremont (10 minutes away) has some darn good restaurants to eat at.. nice variety from Indian to Mediterranean/Greek to Spanish to Italian to Mexican to your normal American fare with large portions. I think I should go more often.

Sorry JJ34, haven't heard of Copperwood Apts in Chino. Mostly familiar with a few in Claremont/Chino Hills/Diamond Bar. Do they currently have any vacancies? Summer is usually the busiest time for these apartments in terms of turnovers.. so there should be something open mid-summer I'm sure. (That's what I'm hoping for with my own apt search in Chino Hills)

I'm in ISAC... amazing how much information can be crammed into 2 days! Geesh. And today we have 3 lectures back to back... more fun! I guess this is a good intro for what is to come.

Hello...

I'm wondering how ISAC is going so far. How many students are there? What is a typical day like?
Oh...can anyone recommend what laptop brand/model is good? (dell, sony, HP, compac, gateway, toshiba, fujitsu, etc.) What do you guys think about the Sony R505 model? I'm planning to get that one but not sure. What do you guys think?
😛

I am also in ISAC. There are 34 students. a typical day involves 2-3 hours of lecture and 3 hours of lab and a one our discussion. it's tough but at the same time it's fun. it has been a good experience so far (three days into ISAC). cool professors, t.a.'s and, of course, cool classmates.

Rickmyster79,

Sounds like fun....too bad I still have to finish my research or else I would of been there with you guys. 🙁 Is it really intense like they say? I bet it is... cramming a semester into that amount of time. Wishing you and everyone Good luck 😛

Hey Honey Hunter,

On laptops - I spent the last month going back forth to Dell & Gateway, designing a system, looking at Sony (very cool comps, but super expensive) and everyother brand. Anyway, I ended up buying a Toshiba Satellite 1905 series. Everything + that we needed for school. I lucked out and got a customer return, so I saved a few hundred $$$ because it was an open box + I got a $100 rebate. Cool thing is though, I bought it at circuit city where you can buy a 4 year extended warranty for a little over $300. Very cool feature as the standard warranty on any brand is 1 year. This way, I am covered for all of med school. With the rebate and extended warranty I paid just over $1800 - usually the price of just the computer and 1 year warranty at most places.

I was on the verge of getting a Tosh 2405 series - one runs $1599 or 1699 and the next model up runs $1899 (before rebates) Major diffs, 14.1 screen vs 15 and 1.6 pent 4 vs 2.0 pent 4.

Good luck and see ya in Aug

Hey Rick and other ISACers,
hope your first exam went well! Enjoy your weekend! I stopped by Wednesday night in the commons to meet some of you folks.. it sounds like everyone's doing alright so far. Don't worry.. what doesn't kill you will make you stronger! 😛

Doctor Jay,

Hey, thanks for the info...
Wow...you got a great deal! Lucky...
I decided to buy the sony R505EL($1599) from Circuit... hehe. Pricey but hey looks good and feels light. 😀 Doing anything fun for the summer? I'm quitting my research job this Friday (one month exact from first day of class) Hoooorray!!! Ok, hope to meet you during orientation. Take it easy...

HEY fellow class mates....i just got in...so i'm new here ...anyways...just wanted to drop a line...and say hi...see you all at orientation....and i'm like most of you....looking for a laptop....too...heheh....any good ideas...let me know...i'm thinking about..the toshiba...p4 w/ 1.6...256mb and 30 g...for 1350 at best buys....well...let me know...laters.

Hello New First Year Students:

I am a fourth year OMM fellow who was in your shoes not that long ago.

I currently live in a four bedroom townhouse in Claremont (about 3 miles from school and one mile from the Village {Downtown Claremont}.

I live with a second year PA student. We need a third roommate. The place is two levels, with AC, inhouse laundry, wet bar, small yard, first level is furnished, attached garage.

If you are a male student, you would get the two smaller rooms (one as a bedroom, one as a study). If you are a female student, you would get the master suite, with a walk in closet and your own attached bathroom.

The rent is $450 with deposit. It will be available during the first week in August.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

Hey - had to re-register since I couldn't get amy posts to work under my previous username following the upgrade. Anyhow, used to go by doctor jay...

Honeyhunter - what kind of research did you do? During undergrad, I did neurochemistry work looking at regulatory factors for tachykinins and enkephalins specific to basal ganglion disorders.

Yeah, I did take a little trip to Catalina for a few days and then spent a couple in dwtn LA/Hollywood/Chinatown. Caught Lion King at the Pantages. Was fun but short.

Now just spending the remainder of time doing some freelance work with a variety of non-profits and developing a training seminar and writing a book. However, looking forward to starting class.

Outgolfing - go with Toshiba. Great computers and great prices!

See ya guys Aug 7

Hey guys and gals.. getting more excited? Is that get-together still going on July 27? Unfortunately, I will be out of town but maybe you can post some details so others who are monitoring and interested can attend...

Hi,

Anyone living in Upland know what company services that area for cable or DSL?

I'm moving there in 2 days!! I'm getting excited to start 🙂

Oh, about laptops, I got a Fujitsu, the A series. Pretty nice, under 6 lbs and @ $1500. You can check it out at www.fujitsupc.com.

See you all soon!!

Hey NX811,
I don't know much about cable internet companies.. you might check into the cable company that services your area and see if they offer broadband internet services there. As far as DSL goes, is your local phone company Verizon? You could try using Verizon or another company, such as DSL Extreme (http://www.dslextreme.com) which I have had good experiences with. DSL availability does depend on your area and how far you are from CO stations that the connection has to be originate from. You can do a little more research on http://www.dslreports.com if you'd like. I live across the street from the school at the Plaza Apts. but I will be moving to Chino Hills this Friday so hopefully I will be able to get DSL there.

Btw, I saw you had a collegeclub account by your e-mail address. I used to spend a little bit of time on there in the past.. how cool!

---oh yeah, if anyone is in search of a fridge to buy, I'm offering a sizeable fridge that is relatively new and clean (I hate messes) for anywhere between $100-$130. Only problem is that I need to move it out of my place between this coming Friday to Sunday (Aug 2nd to Aug 4th). I can help move it downstairs and stuff, but might not have access to a truck to help you move it. It would be located right across the street from school so it's sort of a central location. Well, if anyone knows someone who is interested send over an e-mail to [email protected]. Thanks a ton!

Melancholy,
I am definitely interested about the fridge, I'll send you an e-mail.

Melancholy, for some reason when I send the e-mail to your address, Microsoft doesn't recognize that address. Whatever that means. I'll send it to your e-mail on SDN.

Hi.. I e-mailed you back about the fridge. Unfortunately, someone called pretty early in the morning hours after I posted the message and asked for it so they are moving it out tomorrow. Thanks a lot for your interest though.. my best suggestion would be to stop by the student commons at Western to check out the ads that students have placed for various things they need to sell.

Good luck in your move up here!

FireBlade (doc Jay) - Sorry for the delay in post. I totally moved out of S.D. and now in Pomona. 😛 So did you enjoy the research you did? During my undergrad I didn't do that much research but I managed to get my name publish in an article of the mapping of a novel gene having to do with the development of the T-cell receptor. After graduating I worked full time as a research associate performing cancer research. To make the story short...I was basically testing our novel drug against different NCI drugs to see if there are any synergy. Our lab uses athymic mice to perform the xenograft studies. Anyways, enough about my boring work. Sounds like you are ready for school. I'm excited but kindda scared of not getting into the habit of studying again. But I can't wait... see you and everyone during orientation!!!

Excited? Let's see some posts! I've been looking for you people during orientation but I haven't really found anyone. I'll be there on Friday morning for the school-wide orientation as well as the picnic.. and then the white coat ceremony and then the bbq afterwards. Hope someone recognizes me! =)

Well, you know where to find us... Prem Reddy, baby! You should drop in and offer some of your MSII pearls for us. See you tomorrow.

Hope you guys and gals have a good first week of class!

thanks man...yeah...first day has gone decent...until i heard about all the stuff from anatomy that i have to learn...damn...so much to take in...hahha...well...hope everyone else is as excited..and stuff....anyways....laters...and LH..thanks for the encouraging words.
always,
vinh😛

ANATOMY SUCKS!!

We're upstairs now, WE KNOW THE PAIN!

yeah...yosh..that's good that you agree...yeaaaaahhh...hahaha
well...also as evident that we're getting swampt w/ information...no one is really posting....haahahah...well i'll be counting on you people in the class of 2005 to help us through this...haahha...thank you ahead of time.
always,
vinh

"when life gets you down, grab life by the neck and choke the living daylights out of it."

Yeah that's alright.. it took awhile to get people posting again and remembering what SDN was about. You'll have a few regulars that are doing most of the posting.. and hopefully you folks will be around next semester when others are asking questions about COMP!

Get down and dirty in anatomy!

yeah baby...i got down and dirty....and jiggied w/ it...hhahahha....anatomy takes freakin forever.....but, it's fun...and you learn something new everyday....med school is so tiring....uggghhhh...lanny how do you do it?....oh i forgot...you're my idol...hahha...wells...peeps....keep up the good work on the dissections.
always,
vinh

Anatomy....what to say...sometimes I still wake up at nite to the sounds of the "lambs screaming"...

Most people had an ok time with it...me...well that's another story...but then again..I thought Neuro was ok..and people had a bitch of a time with that...so I guess it is all relative...

Needless to say..I passed both and will never have to deal with that again! At least not in that capacity....THANK GOD!

We are all up here for you guys.....so if you need us..come and talk to us....

See you guys at the party tonight???

Party good.. emergency tracheotomy bad. Just try to keep up however possible, but don't get burned out. Figure out how best to use your time during certain lectures. Some lectures and/or profs are important to pay attention to.. others, maybe not as much. Use your best judgement.. it's your med school career!

Hey folks,
Nice to finally meet a few more SDN MS-I's so far.. namely nx811, tnt3, and rickymeister. Thanks to NX811 for providing me with an emergency lunch to munch on after the AIDS talk! I still need to meet a few more of y'all.. ariel, doctorjay, etc..

hey melancholy,

this is dr j - had to change my handle following the big forum crash in july.

seek me out - usually fourth row, right side facing the stage - shaved head - ride the blue crotch rocket seen sometimes out front.

peace and stuff!

j

hey peoples...i guess a lot of people are studying and don't post ...that's understandable...so melancholy...why do you post so much...hhahaah..j/k....sorry about the thing after the aids lecture...i should have saved you something..at least chau gave you mango..right?....your girl seems nice..sharon that is...she's a keeper..hahaha.....well...two more weeks until tests...keep you fingers crossed for me...and as for me...i got to buckle down and study like there's no tomorrow..."when life gets you down, grab life by the neck and choke the living daylights out of it."....ricky, thanks for the help in lab...i'm sure i'll be saying that more and more...hahahha...welll until nxt time 😀

DoctorJay- Hey.. still trying to look for ya here and there. I was in your classroom the other day sitting down while my fellow MS-II's were putting on skits for UAAO and SANUS. I hear there are other people in your class that don't post on SDN but read it.. even their family members as well!

Vinh- yeah, Chau eventually fed me which was nice. I didn't get mangos though.. I got some old teddy graham crackers from her and a piece of fried chicken from a fellow MS-II.

- Hope all you guys had fun at Club Day. There are still chances to sign up for clubs later so no sweat. I signed up for clubs to give a good balance of medical interest/service ones as well as a few ones just to have fun in. Some clubs didn't have many activities compared to other ones.. you can ask your COMPanions or folks on here about any clubs you have questions about. Participate in clubs when you have the time. For me, they helped me destress and keep an open and active mind in terms of remembering why I wanted to go to med school in the first place. Some clubs gave us early patient contact thru health screenings and observations... other clubs gave me a chance to participate in workshops and listen to lectures on certain specialities and opportunities. Also, some clubs were great in allowing me to get to know students from the other schools (PharmD, PA, PT, etc.) and just a chance to get out and relax for once! So... try to remember these clubs are here for you folks! (At the very least, get some free pizza at noontime lectures and chat it up with other MS-II's!)

Enjoy surface anatomy and I'll eventually meet some more of y'all soon!

Lanny

Melancholy,

Don't diss my old teddy grahams!! It was a sincere gesture. I was eating them... =P
But I did feed you w/ real food last week, so can't be complaining anymore. Thanks for letting me borrow the scope. You're nice...sometimes... =P

So I finally reminded of SDN today at the bbq @ Dr. Wong's. So.. here I am. Nice to be back on the forum. But then I'd probably end up just talking to Lanny and Vinh... No one is posting anymore... understandable though.

Oh Lanny, I know who Dr. Jay is 🙂 He sits in front of me, and is in my roommate's (tnt3) anatomy lab. I can point him out to you next time you're in lecture.
Dr. J- the shaved head hint is a good one 🙂

Bonsoir tout le monde. Je suis tres fatiguee!!

Hey.. I actually got to meet Doctorjay on Friday as Eddie was nice enough to introduce me to him. Cool guy too.. everyone I've met in your class has been friendly so far. I think I have met the majority of the SDN'ers from your class... still trying to find a few more here and there. Actually, I was curious who was the person trying to set up a get-together during this past summer for SDN anyway.

Well, I got my wish to sleep in today so I'd better start studying. It's nice to have my scope back.. I was wondering if the dog had chewed it up or something.

I know folks will start posting once people get back into a routine. Usually, it's just a few at first.. but then everyone wants to have a say as well. In the meantime, study hard and show some love for DO 2006!😍

alrighty...here's some love...muahhhhh....hugggsss...kissessss...hhahahah...are you happy now lanny....j/k...wells...just one more week till our first tests...hope everyone is doing alright.....wells...short post..cuz, i don't really have anything to say accept study hard...and you'll be alright...hopefully..hahha

OH YEAH...P.S.....STUUUUDDDDDDDYYYYY HHAHAHAH 😛 😍

Study study study and know when to relax! The wedding in Houston was fine although I feel like I got absolutely no sleep there at all.

Hehe.. just noticed that NX811 is still a Jr. Member.. need some more posts, girl! That Ping discount might come in handy.. esp. when second semester comes around for you guys! I can't believe you were still up that late studying..

Anyway, I wonder about future applicants on SDN.. hopefully someone will be around to answer all their questions about WUHS/COMP. Get your friends to sign on.. I still need to meet the rest of the SDN COMP 2006 crew!

YEAH piing might be a sweet sound in our ears second semester..hahah...thanks chau for that...well if there are potential comp'ers out there...don't forget to contact one of us...especially melancholy...great guy...i should know...hahah..

Hey.. I can't be spending too much time looking for friends on the 'net anymore, remember?

At any rate, I'd like to invite you folks to visit the Pre-Osteopathic section here on SDN and specifically the thread on COMP.. here's the link:
