Just got accepted to both and I'm having a pretty tough time deciding.

NYIT-COM

Pro:

  • I really like their Doctor Patient Continuum Track for Pre-clinical studies (but no guarantee I would get into it). Does anyone have experience/knowledge of this?
  • They have the opportunity to get a dual DO/MBA. While initially not very appealing to me, the idea of opening job opportunities in the future is growing on me.
Con:
  • Weather (I'm from CA). Minor but something to consider
  • Kind of in middle of nowhere
  • I've seen some discussions on here saying their rotations aren't that good.
  • As someone that would generally like to come back to CA for residency, I hear going to school out of state doesn't do me any favors.
Western U - Pomona
Pro:

  • I stay in CA. Generally closer to friends/family but they are in Norcal
  • As above, I've heard staying in CA can be beneficial for getting CA residencies
  • The campus seems more cohesive and I like the Interdisciplinary curriculum
  • While not one of the top 5, I've seen this pop up as one of the more respected schools
Con:
  • No dual degrees at all.
  • I have heard their rotations are a bit more skewed to small community hospitals.
Anyone have experience or know other things I should take into account? Thanks!

You sound more enthused by Western, and it seems to be a better school too. I'd pick it for the sake of wanting to practice in California alone. Good luck deciding!

Pomona is pretty expensive, I dont know what NYIT costs. I would say go with western, you want to stay in California, why not go to school in California so you improve your chances of residency in California.

I believed that you already know the answer based on your cons

Yes. Based on location and weather (assuming all other things being equal) Western seems like the choice for me. I guess I was trying to see if people had any information they could share about quality of rotations or other things to consider that I haven't thought of.
