I was looking through the ADEA guide on dental schools and ItsGavinC's thread on Arizona and was wondering what Grand Rounds are. I asked two of my friends at USC dental, my older brother (UOP graduate), and my parents (both practicing dentists) and no one could give me a defination.

Could anyone help me out?

I attended a few as a DS3 oral surgery summer extern at Bellevue/NYUCD... The chief resident presented the OR surgical cases that he operated on during the week to the assembled OMFS faculty.

Not sure if other institutions do grand rounds differently though.

HTH.

Traditionally normal ward rounds were also called "Grand Rounds", which were run by the Chief Resident.
However today's Grand Rounds are run by Department Heads or Chief Residents and are given to faculty/dept heads/residents/interns in a hospital auditorium. Although many are still run by CRs, sometimes many people present.
They are open to anyone, space permitting.
You will even see a few nurses, some OT's and even the odd orderly.
Grand Rounds are a recap of the week's /month's ongoings within the department/hospital.
Alot of interesting cases are presented. I have attended some truly interesting presentations.
They are good for learning and networking-showing your face where and when needed.
Also the food is alright, cant pass up a free offer of food!

I only learned what "rounds" and "grand rounds" exactly were when I started my residency two months ago.

Grand rounds in our department are once a week and are described as "where Oral Surgery residents cry." The OMS residents have to present cases where they participated in the surgery and treatment of the patient. They present the pre-op pictures, films, history and background, surgical pictures, post-op, etc. But they don't just present, the OMS attendings are all sitting in the front waiting to rip the residents apart for every detail they present and sometimes their questions are just ridiculous (like they have no learning value at all). For example, one week one of the attendings asked the resident "If you only had one hand, how would you go about performing this procedure?" Sometimes the cases they present have to follow a theme, like pathology or orthognathic.

Rounds are every morning and evening. It is when the OMS residents and GPR residents go to the patients who are staying in the hospital overnight after their oral surgeries. The residents do exams and check the patients to make sure they are doing well after the surgery or to see if any problems complications are developing.

I was at Arizona's school last week for an interview, and I asked the Dean what they meant by "grand rounds." He said that once a week they have professor (I'm not sure if it's a visiting professor or who else) present a case or cases to the students, and then they have a discussion. The purpose is to get dental students in the habit of diagnosing. Arizona's school of dentistry is part of the Kirksville school of medicine, which is an osteopathic school. Their emphasis is on mind, body, and spirit. So, these grand rounds activities support their belief in how dental care should be more than drill and fill; but, instead, should be more about diagnosis.
