I received my pharmacy technician license two days ago and I called up a local CVS pharmacy store for a job. They said to come on Tuesday at 3pm. I thought it was weird that they didn't even ask if I applied to that store or even asked for my name. They just asked to turn in my resume and license info. How will I do if hired if I have never worked at CVS nor have any prior experience as a pharm tech? I am currently a 4th year pharm sci major at UC Irvine so I should know some stuff.
What are my chances at CVS with interview?

I got hired at CVS with absolutely no experience as a tech, they trained me and paid for my state registration. I think you got the job 🙂

I work for CVS and it sounds to me like they're DESPERATE and searching high and low for competency. A 4th year pharmaceutical sciences major sounds like a good fit, regardless of previous experience. I'm sure you'll be hired on the spot,

i dont know about you, most people do fine without prior experience. i mean who had pharmacy experience BEFORE they were hired.

First of all, congrats on getting into that Pharmaceuticals Sciences program at UC Irvine. I actually graduated from there last spring and they didn't even have the program yet.
I have a lot of friends who started at Target without any experience. I do not know how CVS is since it is a bigger pharmacy. I am currently working for Target as a technician and I love it there. However, I was lucky to have experience from a new and independent pharmacy.
I am sure they will train you well and you will do fine once trained, if given the position. The hardest part is just getting them to hire you without experience -- especially since the economy is so bad.

I also forgot to mention, that all the stuff I learned at UC Irvine does not help me as a pharmacy technician. The things you need to know are drugs' generic and brand names. It does not matter if you know what they do because you are not the pharmacist and cannot consult anyway.

Being a tech at CVS is all about learning the way they do business, along with the computer systems that they have in place. There is a high amount of customer service involved like any customer based retail job, but don't let a lack of knowledge bother you. You will pick up everything as you go, and they make sure to cross train you in almost everything. Just make sure you ask about things you are unsure about and every thing will work out fine

CVS is a great company in that they train you in classes before you actually do some "on the job training". Other than that, the computer systems are pretty easy to use in comparison, to say, Target. Everything is pretty self explanatory when doing Drop-Off, you just have to get used to it and become faster. Work hard and show your pharmacy manager and the rest of the pharmacists that you can pick things up fast and perform...you don't want to be the designated pick up slave 🙁
