I am graduating from Rutgers soon after taking one more summer class.. I will start applying soon to dental schools( hopefully will be done bu August). I have not taken the DATS yet, but will do so at the end of summer. I have no dental experience whatsoever and am wondering if that will significantly affect my chances of getting in. My GPA is 3.72 cumulative, and 3.92 science. I will be applying to UMDNJ, NYU and Temple. This summer I will be shadowing a dentist and maybe even working in a dental office. What are my chances of getting in? I know that experience is a big factor and I am so scared that I will not get in because of not having any. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Give me a break. Just do well on your DAT and you'll be more than fine. All that extra stuff like volunteering and shadowing isn't THAT important if you have good grades and scores. Plus, you'll have shadowing experience this summer so you shouldn't worry at all. Good luck.

actual work experience in a dentist office is sort of a bonus, rather than required, part of the application. As long as you have shadowed for around 20 hours or so to show them that you know what you're getting into you will be fine. in fact the majority of applicants do not have work experience, just shadowing.

There are some schools that require shadowing experience. I would look into the schools you are applying to and make sure.
