Hey thanks for reading! I'll get straight to it.
Overall, I feel that I have a strong application. The one aberration--and I realize its an important one--is my GPA.
1.) My undergrad is the University of Michigan, major is Cellular and Molecular Biology.
2.) My overall and science GPA are both ~3.1. Unfortunately, my grades are a little sporadic. I have 4 C+'s in some pre-reqs (orgo I, orgo II, physics I, and stats).
3.) I have yet to take the MCAT. I'm currently studying the Kaplan books for self-prep.
4.) I have 1 year of molecular biology research experience.
5.) When I graduate, I will have 2 years of clinical research experience at the University Hospital where I have the opportunity to interview patients as part of the job.
6.) I've job shadowed 3 physicians in an inpatient setting (and have a letter of rec from one).
7.) I volunteer occasionally at the VA hospital.
8.) I have traveled abroad twice -- once for a generic 1-week medical service trip, and once as part of a class to learn about the culture/religion/politics of a region.
9.) I'm on the exec board of a small global health student organization. My other main extracurricular is helping to lead a bible study group at church.
10.) There are some qualities that I might mention in a personal statement: I'm a first-gen college student, and I'm proud to say that I've overcome the challenges of living with 2 autoimmune diseases.
I think that's all the relevant info. I'd truly appreciate any thoughts or advice!! My support system for figuring this out is kind of non-existent so thanks again for reading.
Just FYI I'm considering several options at the moment:
1.) Apply now (would this be money/effort wasted?)
2.) Check out post-bacc programs, or an SMP. Although I'm worried about the financial implications.
3.) Take some time off to work, maybe look into PA school.
4.) Forget about medicine and go to grad school (this one just sounds sad).
