Hey all,

I wanted to know what my chances are for getting into dental school. I recently finished my AADSAS application and their calculated gpa information scared me.

Info:
Overall gpa: 3.33
science gpa: 3.09
bcp gpa: 3.08
I thought I would have a 3.1 bcp gpa, but it didn't work out ( didn't realize biostat was considered other science, since my school said it was considered under biology).

Also, I am going to take anatomy and physiology at a community college, so perhaps that can raise my science and bcp gpa a little bit.

EC:
140 hours of shadowing
70 hours of volunteering at hospital and with the mentally challenged

DAT:
I haven't taken the DAT but realistically I am thinking 18-20 range.

Schools I've applied to:
Midwestern (IL and AZ)
Western university (CA)
Lake erie college (FL)
Nova southeastern university (FL)
Southern illinois
UIC (IL)
Boston university (MA)
Tufts (MA)
University of new england (ME)
University of michigan (MI)
NYU
Meharry (TN)
Virginia commonwealth

I am an Illinois resident

I know my app is really nothing special, but what do you guys think? I know my gpa is very low, but do I have a chance at all?

Almost impossible to say without knowing your DAT score, but an 18-20 might not be enough to make up for the low GPA.

Don't apply to Meharry unless you are a minority. SIU prefers rural area students. If you get an interview at SIU (but lived your life in an urban/suburban area and went to an urban/suburban school), then they will scrutinize you about that and ask why. They really want rural dentists so be weary of that. I don't know if UNE takes maine students first. Just double check with them. Also, double check on Nova's GPA requirements. Last year when I spoke to someone there they said that the incoming class GPA was 3.8, but it may be different this time. So just check that one too.

Other than that we need to know your DAT scores. Its kinda hard to tell without those.

You have some chance, but realistically I would think a fairly small percentage (I would guess about 10-20%) of applicants with those stats get accepted.

Maybe WesternU will give you an invite as long as your personal statement is good and your DAT scores fall into the 20's. I would apply to roseman and lecom also.

It's hard to say without a DAT. I believe if you make a 20+ and apply to the right schools you'll have a good chance. You can add/take out schools when you get your DAT scores in, it would be easier to get a good list.

Same thing happened to be. I took biopsych (it's under biology at my school) but it's not considered in science GPA. It sucks.

Take A&P I, A&PII, and another math? Cal2? These classes are offered at CC and it'll boost up your GPA if you make A's in them.

The problem I have is that on aadsas, I only put down A&P I down for the coursework ( some schools has A&P I prereqs). I already submitted my application and it doesn't seem like I can edit coursework at all. Do you know if there's any way to make the edits?

Some chance is there. Report back with DAT for better advice.

I think more like 30-50%

Look at the schools stats and do the math.

Stony brook, Harvard and maybe UOP are in that 10% range of accepting 3.1gpa and 19 DAT APPLICANTS

In Texas, only about 15% of those admitted have a GPA below a 3.3. I don't know about the 50 something other schools.

Also depends on how you crunch the numbers.

For example:
100 seat DS with 3.5 average for ITS STUDENTS.

50 students have 3.0 GPA
And 50 students with 4.0 GPA
Average accepted GPA is ranged between 3.0 to 4.0

Sure, but fortunately TMDSAS actually breaks it down.

TMDSAS publishes the data by GPA bracket, and last year only 14% (39/286) of those admitted had a 3.3 or worse, and only 10% (39/~390) of those who applied with a 3.3 were accepted.

well, it's been a while, but I have the results. I did pretty much **** on my DAT test.

DAT info:

AA: 17
PA: 18
QR: 14 ( idk what happened here...)
RC: 21
Science: 16
- Biology: 17
- chem: 15
- orgo: 16

With this in mind, I know I won't get into anywhere. So, I decided to pursue the masters program path.

The question I have is: is my DAT score at an ok place for masters, or should I retake it (hopefully a higher score), and then apply?

Retake, some of those scores are below the minimum to even apply at some schools.
