I will be receiving a bachelor's in Biology and Psychology this coming winter with a minor in Medicine and Society. I decided not to apply this cycle because i felt my numbers were weak and that I needed to improve my MCAT score and gain more experience in the field. I've decided to apply to a non-degree/certificate seeking program for a Masters in Public Health and eventually take my GRE (after my MCAT) to get into a degree seeking MPH program. On top of that program, I will be continuing to volunteer at Methodist Hospital and maybe apply for a scribe job. I also plan on taking a mission trip to Africa next spring to do research and to work at a local clinic. Any advice or critiques would be nice because I still feel very lost at the moment and need to know if I'm at least taking a step in the right direction.

Thank you!

If you can increase your MCAT to 500 you could receive interviews at some of the newer DO schools. Your current MCAT of 494 is not competitive for any DO school. Your GPA and EC's are fine for the majority of DO schools.

Id also so disregard the non-degree and the degree MPH. You need a good MCAT and to raise your sGPA. You cant glaze some ECs over bad stats.

Definitely need to re-take the MCAT. Take tons of practice exams and do a lot of practice problems. Don't take the actual MCAT until you are scoring ~507 on practice exams.

You are currently not competitive for any medical school. Why are you looking into MPH programs? They won’t help you improve your med school application. Your time would be better spent doing a post bac to improve your GPAs. You should also just stay right here in the USA for your ECs. What happened with the MCAT? That’s a really low score. Don’t take it again until you are consistently scoring at your target score . Are you considering DO schools?

You need to do a postbacc to show success in the hard sciences...an mph will not help there

Also, mcat should be 500 at the least before you apply

I am considering DO schools.

Need to raise that MCAT about 6-8 points to have a good shot at DO. There are people who’ve gotten into DO programs with ~495 MCAT scores but they’re the exception not the rule. And if you can score somewhere in the 505-508 ballpark you’re competitive for many DO schools. Apply early and broadly. Gpa is fine. Good luck!
