Hello! I am a prospective applicant, unsure whether my chances of getting into an MD program are enough for me to apply this coming cycle.

Profile:

CA resident
Attended CA public school, major in Biology, minor in English
ORM

Stats:
3.48 overall GPA
3.3 science GPA
514 MCAT taken June 2017

ECs:
  1. Volunteering-non clinical
    1. Peace Corps Volunteer July 2017-present, 3200 hours of service
      1. Leadership :
        1. Warden of region in charge of around 40 other volunteers
        2. Health committee Education liaison providing support for all volunteers to participate in health related activities in their communities
    2. Science and Engineering mentoring club site leader for elementary/middle school students, 300 hours
    3. American Red Cross club member, organized blood drives on campus and aided participants in preparation and recovery, 100 hours
  2. Volunteering- clinical
    1. Hospital volunteering, with patient interaction, aiding in language translation between patients and staff, 80 hours
  3. Clinical work
    1. Scribing-Prospective hours 200 hours, (to start after return from PC service in July)
  4. Research experience at distinguished university, no publications, 800 hours
  5. Shadowing :
    1. In country of PC service local clinic, 40 hours
    2. MD in USA, prospective 50 hours (to do upon returning home)

My dilemma is that I took my MCAT in June 2017 before leaving for PC service, so this coming app cycle 2019-2020 is my last year to apply before my MCAT score expires for many schools . However, because my clinical scribing and US shadowing are to be done upon my return in July, I will not be able to write these on my primary application, which I had planned to submit in June 2019, and only on my secondaries. I realize my GPA is relatively low, but if I attend a post-bacc program this year and complete my clinical hours and wait until 2020 to apply, my MCAT will have expired.

I am not sure how to proceed. What are my chances of getting into an MD program this cycle? Or DO?

The sGPA and current lack of clinical exposure is lethal for MD and probably DO as well (my own student interviewers would eat you alive).

Bite the bullet and retake the MCAT, and then apply with the best possible app.

And no, Walt, being in the Peace Corps will not salvage this app.

I suggest these schools with your stats:
UC Irvine
UC Davis
Loma Linda
California University
Kaiser
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Dartmouth
Albany
New York Medical College
Seton Hall
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
Georgetown
Eastern Virginia
NOVA MD
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Medical College Wisconsin
Loyola
Rush
Rosalind Franklin
St.Louis
Creighton
Tulane
Also apply to at least 6 DO schools. Apply in June and submit all your secondaries by July.
