Just asking for your opinion...

I have my B.S. in genetics and cellular biology...gpa cum 3.06...DAT AA 16, TS 16, RC 21, PA 13. I graduated in May 2006 and now work in a dental office as a patient representative and dental assistant (I am DA certified and have radiography certification). Where (if any) schools would you recommend I apply to and do I even have a chance of getting accepted???😕

Thanks in advance 🙂

I would retake the DATs and get scores of ~20 or higher to have a decent shot of getting in.

some (maybe most) schools have a dat cut off range of aa/ts/pat = 17/17/17. so you want to strive for atleast 17s across the board.

I think 18 is the national average. At the very least you want to be on par with that.

Your experience would certainly help you. As the other post said, at least an 18, at minimum, to get into dental school. Having a 20 or higher is definitely a plus, a score that is definitely attainable with enough practice. The DAT isn't like the SATs where you can only score up to a certain level after numerous practice exams. It is largely a knowledge-based exam.

The 13 PA is going to kill you, pure and simple. There is hope because you have plenty of time to re-take the DAT and rock it. With a 3.0 gpa you are going to need to make up for it in experience (which you have) and a good DAT score (which you dont have). When you get your good score, check predents and see which schools dont emphasize GPA over DAT and apply to those schools. Good luck.

not good, if not horrible

i had a 17/18/18 and got into a lot of schools

Please take this with a grain of salt! A lot of people got in with those stats because they have a unique background. For dudes like me, we need no less than 18AA to have a chance.

If you're a minority, you can always check out Howard, Tennesse, or MeHarry.

nope, not on predent...and not a minority. I guess I'll have to retake the DAT or go to grad school and bring up my science GPA (nonscience is 3.46). Anymore advice, anyone? What about international dental schools?

I had a 17/18/19 and got into none schools!

If you have a state school you might get in with a DAT like this. You might even know a d-school prof who will write you a LOR. If you are out of state, and not URM, I'd say your overall application will need to be pretty strong to offset scores below the national average.

As an aside, if 13K people are applying this year for about 4.5K slots then you would think that well over 6K applicants have average or better scores. I suspect that this line of thinking is what drives people to get scores that are above average. However, it's been said many times that it's not just the scores that get you in - it's the whole package. Scores get you across the initial cutoff.

Are there really 13,000 people applying this year?

Though some may think it a waste of money, in your situation I would take a DAT review course. Maybe Kaplan or something. During these courses they will teach you little tricks that will definitely help with the PAT. I know it's not cheap but it would be an investment, and it would force you to study. My GPA was actually a little lower than yours, but my DAT scores were in the 20's. My experience was about 100 hours of shadowing and lots of volunteer work. It took three years of trying, but I finally got in. Bring those DAT scores up and you'd be good.👍

Definitely retake the DAT. Aim for 20's. If your GPA was a bit higher, an 18 MAY be okay (doubt that for next cycle). Your GPA is sub-par, so I would definitely advise putting some work into the DAT. You can do it, it's just a matter of setting your mind to it. Buy topscore, dat destroyer, and go over the kaplan blue book. Study hard. You can do it. 👍

To the OP,

The brutally honest truth is that you have no chance to get in to D school with what you have now. Unless you have alum ties.

guys what if your science GPA is higher, say 3.2 but your overall is 2.8. what are the chances with 18,20,17 if you apply super early with extra cur. activities?
