What are my chances of getting accepted in the 2011-12 cycle? I just want to get into a med school. I'm not too concerned with trying to get into a top school.

Here's a summary of my stats/resume:

AO GPA: 3.74
BCPM: 3.25
Overall: 3.43
Undergrad: Ivy League school (not Harvard)
MCAT: Will take soon

Major: Biology

ECs:
-Active in 2 campus organizations related to science/health for 4 years each
-Active in 1 campus organization related to science/health for 3 years

Leadership:
-Co-President for 1 organization for 3 years
-Training Officer for 1 organization for 2 years
-Vice-President for 1 organization for 3 years

Community Service/Volunteer:
-Mentor kid with learning disability for Big Brothers Big Sisters Program for 3 years
-Volunteered as EMT for 3 years
-Participated in 4 alternative spring break volunteer trips (1 international, 3 domestic)
-Health clinic volunteer in small rural village in Peru, full-time (40 hrs/week for 9 weeks)
-English teacher/activities coordinator for kids in same village as above (2 hrs/week for 9 weeks)

Clinical experience:
-Two summer internships in a hospital (6 weeks each), one in Med/Surg dept and the other in ER (Since I was an EMT, they allowed me to do chest compressions, dislocation reductions, assist in suturing, vital signs, and much more cool stuff)
-Water Park (EMT in First Aid department)
-EMT on campus (3 years)
-Health clinic volunteer (mentioned above in volunteer section)

Other relevant work experience:
-Basic Life Support (CPR & First Aid) Instructor 2.5 years
-Chem TA, tutor, study group leader 3 years

Research:
-Undergrad research in med school for 1 year
-Senior Honors thesis with same PI for 1 year
-Summer research in cancer research center (9 weeks)

Other experiences:
-Studied Abroad in Spain, took Spanish courses in language, art, literature, and culture (11 weeks)

So that's a pretty quick glance at my resume. Let me know if my application is strong enough to compensate for my low GPAs, or if a SMP is necessary. Comments are appreciated. Thank you.

Presumably you have another year of GPA repair time ahead of you before you apply in 2011. You can extrapolate your chances of an acceptance based on this AMCAS data for various cGPA and MCAT combinations: http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/table24-mcatgpagridall2007-09.pdf

Your ECs are strong but may not override the low BCPM (depending on the circumstances). Adcomms will want reassurance that you'll survive their science-intense curriculum. It will help if you have a strong upward grade trend, particulalry in upper-level science.

Actually, I already graduated, but I'm delaying my application. So my GPA stands as is. But my final year was all advanced bio classes such as Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, Advanced Genetics, etc. and got As and A-s in all of them. Also, I would like to point out that I retook Orgo II since I got a D the first time around. This time, however, I got an A-. So there's definitely a steep upward trend in my final year. I also wrote a microbiology thesis and got designated "honors" for it at graduation--hopefully that helps.

The concern that you be able to survive a science-intense med school curriculum would be eased by the steep recent upward grade trend in upper-level Bio.

The final hurdle will be getting a high enough MCAT score to compensate for the low cGPA of 3.43. I trust you are a good standardized test taker. I'd suggest aiming for a 33+, hopefully scoring repeatedly in your target zone on practice tests before taking the real thing.

If the odds you'd have with such a score are acceptable, then an expensive SMP wouldn't be needed.
