Hey folks;

Im a 43 year old non-traditional applicant. I've been a dental hygienist for 14 years and Im a dental hygiene educator. I don't have a bachelor degree but Im, instead, working on the science pre-requisite courses. I have two more requisites to fulfill before I can apply. Some of the dental schools I have talked to has labelled me as a "unique student", not quite sure what that means but would love to hear your take on it..... Does anyone know what my chances are in getting in to dental school?? Thanks, your posts are truly appreciated.

🙂

It's never too late! I spoke to a school that has a 46 y.o. in their D1 class with 6 kids. As the Director said, " It don't get no non-traditional than that." Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wish i knew this 46 year old.....

Check to make sure your prerequisites are not too old to be accepted by the schools to which you want to apply.

We have a 39 year old in our first-year class. He was a chef his whole life, went back and got his pre-reqs. I do think he had a BS, but how many years has that been? If you want it, you can get it.

To be honest I don't think anyone here can accurately describe your chances. Your situation is so unique that you're best off talking to admissions directors at programs you're interested in, and asking them what they expect of you prior to entering.

Be sure to account for the financial burden on yourself and your family (if you have one). Dental school debt, plus the lack of income while in school will definitely have an impact. Also, at your age you should consider the timeline of paying back school debt.

Thank you Cicrdh08!! I was speaking to director of admissions at one university where they said they had a student who was 60 years old!!!!!! I just have so much admiration for those individuals.....Thanks for the encouragement....!!!!!! 🙂

One guy in my class entered with age 42 with 4 kids and end up as class president and had navy supported his education. He was a nurse before career change. If it is your passion go for it !
