Hi everyone,

I've been a long-time lurker on these forums for a while and I just really need some serious advice.

I attend York University in Canada and I'm finishing my 2nd year. Ill be applying with 3 years of university. My primary goal since day 1 of university was to attend dental school in the US. I plan on applying this June.

GPA: 4.0
DAT: plan on writing it this august

If I score well (20+) on the us DAT, do you think I have a shot of getting into the following schools despite writing the DAT so late in august?

University of detroit mercy
Loma Linda
USC
University of buffalo
UPenn
University of Minnesota
University of the pacific
Howard university
University of maryland

I also realize that Ill be applying with only 3 years of undergrad. Thanks in advance!

Yea, those schools require a 4.5 GPA from Canadian applicants so your out of luck.

Will you be getting your bachelor's degree by the time you matriculate? I'll be applying this summer and I'm finishing up 3rd year now. Is that what you meant with applying with only 3 years? If you're not getting your bachelor's by time you matriculate, chances will be low, especially for non-US residents.

Also note that some schools will not accept non-US residents. Also note that Loma Linda is a very religious school and does require a LOR from a religious group leader.

Nope... no chance... of course you will have a chance. ASSUMING you get a 20+ you have a great chance of gettting in to any of those schools. August is late though and dramatically decreases your chances. If there is any way you could take the DAT earlier I would recommend it. It will make the process a lot less stressful. Also, I wouldn't apply to howard. Depending on your DAT scores, you may want to add a couple more schools. I would say maybe 10-12 schools because you are applying so late.

Thats the thing, I wont be ready to take the US dat any earlier🙁 I finish the summer kaplan course in august, so I wont be able to write until then.

I just hope there will be some seats left by the time I apply though.

I will not be getting my bachelor degree by the time of matriculation unfortunately, since I'm finishing 2nd year up now. As for Loma Linda, I can get a LOR from a priest at the church I volunteer at.

Do you think its worth it to apply though? Is there still a chance despite not having a degree?

It's pretty pointless to apply. Majority of the schools expect you to have a bachelors before you matriculate. You just have to apply after your Jr. year. By then, you'll have some DAT scores to go with your application so you can gauge better where you can go.

But I've read that getting in with only 3 years is possible though if your stats are good enough.

Only if you can obtain your bachelors prior matriculation. I've known plenty of people who finished their bachelors in 3 years and have gotten in.

If you've got the money then really no harm in applying. Also add NYU, Indiana, Case, and maybe Pittsburgh.

Well, at my school there is a 3 year bachelors degree option and a 4 year "honours" bachelor degree. I CAN graduate with just the basic 3 year bachelor degree. But does this really improve my chances?

Hey thanks, I'll be sure to look into those too...especially NYU, close to home 😛

Yes, having a "degree" will improve your chances over waiting a 4th year for an honors degree (in my opinion). Add Case and NYU to your list. Call all of the schools on your list and ask them what they would rather see. Every school differs, but I think in general you'll find that they prefer interviewing/admitting someone with a solid degree in hand (even if it is the 3-yr option!). Best of luck!

i'd say you have a solid shot at these schools. not sure about howard though, tbh.

i would throw NYU, BU, and Case on that list as well. they're very canadian friendly..especially BU. Tufts doesn't admit canadians anymore, so BU will prob see a surge in canadian students in a few years. just speculation though

I am applying to 1 canadian dental school...university of toronto. The reason why I want to apply to US schools is mainly just a preference.

Why not howard? Is it much more competitive than the others?

Thanks, but I wish I could apply to these schools. They require matriculants to have a bachelors degree...I'm just finishing my 2nd year 🙁
