Hi All!

I am a current M3 looking for objective advice on my chances at IM residency at certain programs I was interested in. My step score, while not terrible, was much lower than expected in the range of 230-235, and makes me wonder if I should reassess my goals. I was hoping to do IM residency in an academic program in a city and purse Pulm/CC. It is of course my goal to do my best in clerkships and Step 2 to compensate if possible, but I was wondering if my current step score would close any doors or lower my chance at some of these programs.

Other Info: I am an average medical student (ranked third to fourth quintile) in a low/mid tier SE school (expecting region bias). I expect to have ~15 abstracts and 3-5 reports in terms of research.

Programs of Interest: DC (Georgetown, GW), Chicago (Rush, UIC), Philly (Temple, Jefferson), U Miami, UAB, UT Houston

Thank you!
1. Are you an MD or DO student?

2. You are around the average for matched IM applicants. You should be ok.

I think the schools you named are likely in your wheelhouse with the exception of perhaps Alabama. That being said, it's always hard to predict how individual programs will react, so if you are aiming for academics, I would apply to more schools rather than less. I'm noticing a predilection for big cities, which is cool. I'm the same way. But you may need to broaden your horizons. some great academic programs to consider, particularly in the midwest: Case Western/University Hospitals, Indiana University, Loyola, Iowa.
