I didn't see a thread on this in search, but its probably because I didn't know what to search for.

When you are considering certain DO schools, what do you take in to consideration as being important? This is a personal question, and I'd really like to know what each person considered.

Being very new to this, I'd say average MCAT and GPA scores, location, and price. But I think I could be wrong with this, so I want some more perspective. So what do you value when choosing a school?

type "how to choose a school" in the Google box at the top right of your page. first hit should be a golden oldie from old_mil.

For me it was location (close to home AND great weather), cost (tuition + living expenses), class size, and the facilities. Of course when you apply you should look at what MCAT and GPA average for the schools are, but don't let it turn you down if you really like that school. You never know if they will fall in love with you during your interview.

But ithink clinical rotations were a huge factor in my decision.

Definitely true for me as well, rotations that is. Granted, we've a ways to go until we get to clinicals but they're here and plentiful at a variety of large health centers in Denver. Also considered the type of curriculum since I desired a true integrated model.

Thanks, everyone! I don't know anything about rotations. I know what they are and how important they are, but I don't know yet what makes a good rotation good... if that makes any sense.

Also the type of curriculum is something I wasn't thinking about. Whether or not they're hands-on or teach from the book... This is a VERY large decision indeed!

Thank you all so much. And BTW, hotness of chicks does matter. That brings up a whole new question of, "What DO school has the hottest girls in its town?" My vote would be on someplace south like the Phoenix area...

And lastly, thanks for the links...

I know that TCOM has hot chicks. And TCU is nearby too, and the chicks there are ridiculously hot. They are also rich and snobby, but hot.

LOL. Most good-looking women know they are and see what they can get away with. I don't know all of the acronyms yet, so I have to go look them up... 🙂

But, if you're going to impress a snobby girl, there's not too many better ways than going to med school. I always joke around and say a guy with a six-figure salary is just as sexy to a woman is as a woman with a perfect 10 figure is to a guy... Both sexes are equally shallow in our own special way. 🙂

TCOM is Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. It's the DO school affiliated with the University of North Texas, which, aside from a few programs, is generally regarded as a glorified high school (UNT, not TCOM, which is an excellent medical school). Although it probably isn't as bad as Texas Tech or Texas State.

TCU is a pretty good school. It is very expensive and very snobby. It is in Ft. Worth, but it has that Dallas feel. If you're not familiar with Dallas, think LA, but without the movie stars.

I dated a girl who went to TCU for a little while. She was one of the hottest girls I have ever dated. She totally dumped me on my ass. I recently heard that she is now fat, and that gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

The University of North Texas (UNT) from what I've been told is only lacking the oil-reserves/land grants that would provide a suitable football team to put it on par with Texas A&M and UT - they're trying that with competition in the Sunbelt Conference 🙂rolleyes🙂. The science depts at UNT (I have a friend who attended/graduated with a MS Biomed) are very strong and affiliated with the biomedical sciences at TCOM (UNT owns TCOM/UNT-HSC). You may have heard it was a glorified highschool because they (UNT) take the best and brightest highschool kids through what is referred to as their TAMS program - the Texas Academy of Math and Science. Logistically, Southwestern is also nearby and I know there's research collaboration with UNT/TCOM as well. Other than that, there were/are hot ladies galore at UNT, too - it's DFW, TX! Tech and Texas State aren't even in the same league.
