Our first year has almost come to and end, and I was wondering what everyone is doing this summer. I know some schools have their students take boards between 1st and 2nd year, but for those of us who don't have to study for boards just yet, what will you be doing? Any travel plans? Research? Mission trips? Summer electives? Jobs? And for those who do have boards, will you be doing anything before or after? Let's hear it 🙂

scheduling patients 😛
studying for boards
general gunning

Some OMFS program is letting you extern there with out having taken the boards or seen any patients? you must be one smooth talker. 😀

As for me this summer I will be getting married and then going to mucho class, getting my first 8 patients, and I guess studying for the boards cause it is obviously the hip thing to do these days.

NYU D2 Summer= No summer.

We'll be in clinics starting @ the end of May thru the middle of August. We have the last 2 weeks of August off to finish cramming for and take NDBE 1.

edit: oops. just noticed you meant between D1 and D2, not between D2/D3.

There are 3 Pacific 1st years doing a full month of externships this year at USC, LSU-NO and Jacksonville 👍

High-5's all around! That is awesome. You are going to be miles ahead when you get to start doing extractions in the clinic.

SB gives off July 1 - Aug 25 so I'll be relaxing for 8 weeks 🙂

Bit of work for some $$, hopefully tutoring. We take the boards after year 2.

medical diagnosis 1
Clinical rotations (i.e. doing prophy recalls 4 days a week and assisting in various clinics)
Dentures
Operative 3

We have a 1 weak break after finals and have two weaks in the middle of the summer and 1.5 weeks after summer session.

Plan on camping playing golf, brewing beer and generally not thinking about school whenever possible.

working out a lot to get rid of the 10 pounds I gained in the fall
playing lots of golf
studying for the first pathology test
i may get a job too for a few weeks of the summer but i'm not sure yet

I thought all schools had summer classes. Guess not.

Nope... we are off from May 15th to July 21st... some people are doing research, others are doing elective courses our school offers in the summer, some are doing the CMDA mission trip, others are working, traveling, relaxing, etc. Better enjoy it... it's the last time it will happen.

The summer after D1 year I rode a motorcycle off-road up the length of the continental divide, two thousand miles from New Mexico to the Canadian border. Took like three weeks, camping out all along the way. Trip of a lifetime.

Also took off after D2 year and bicycled across England/Scotland, ferry boat out to the Outer Hebrides... hauntingly beautiful corner of the world.

etc.

Could have stayed on campus and "gunned" and probably pushed my class rank up another notch or two... SO GLAD that I didn't.

As the years go on you will continue to pick up more and more claims against your freedom: loan payback, patient scheduling issues, mortgage, spouse and above all children. You are more free and independent now than you will EVER be again. As a general dentist, nobody cares what your class rank was or what you made on the Boards. My advice is, aggressively learn as much as you can and work hard M-F during the semester to become a good clinical dentist, but have adventures while you can on weekends and over school breaks.
