What are the top 10 schools for ophthalmology? Where can I get this information?

Also, if I am not interested in an academic / research career in ophthalmology and would rather just be a clinician, is it still very difficult to get into the non-research-oriented ophthalmology programs?

What is the general consensus about having research experience when applying to ophtho?

Thanks.

dear tiamoth,
this topic comes up from time to time. there are links to top 20 ophtho programs through US News and Ophthalmology Times. Please find links to these resources under the FAQ sticky.

ophtho is a very competitive match regardless of whether you are applying to a top 20 program or to a more community-oriented clinical program.

re: research. do it if it interests you. the most important ingredients for a successful ophtho match are Step I USLMLE scores, Clerkship grades (esp G Surg and Int Med) and letters of rec (esp from ophtho). research is icing on the cake.

Good Luck!
Ruben

Dear ruben,

that is good to know. But when you say letters of rec, don't research PI's count? Who else is good for letters of rec?

These lists might be considered as "top 10 most prestigious ophthalmology chairmanships". Residents have different needs and, even among themselves, have different needs, so one's top 10 list is never the same as the US News top 10 list.

Even if the list was considered the top 10 most prestigious chairmanships, the list would not be the same as the best 10 chairmanships. I would not want to be a chairman under certain medical school deans.

you should have at least 2 letters from clinicians. one letter from a research PI will probably help, but remember, you are applying to an ophthalmology residency program, not a research fellowship.
