What basic science subject/class do you hate?

Microbiology is the worst.
 
Pretty much all of them except for phys and path.
 
Histology. Why do they keep teaching this stuff to us?

Wait, wait. Maybe I should clarify. I should say that I like the topics in path that actually have a pathophysiological process behind it. I feel like tearing my own fingernails off everytime I have a lecture filled with 200 slides of random skin diseases or cancers for which they provide no mechanistic details and expect us only to remember some esoteric name coupled with some alphabet soup cancer marker.
 
BIOCHEM, BIOCHEM AND BIOCHEM.

I know med school is mainly rote memorization, but come on already, enough was enough!

Wasn't really challenging, just not interesting.

That's charitable. It felt like I was being lobotomized with a blunt object.
 
I'm not looking forward to endocrinology.

Also, immunology is great until you have to start memorizing specific cytokines...

Funny you mention that. My school just announced today that they were inviting the first 6 students to reply to a "casual" discussion regarding our biochemistry course, which I'm sure is the worst biochemistry class among the 125 accredited schools. I asked if they were inviting the course director or any admins, and she said, "Yes, both deans and the course director will be there." I was like, "Um, no thanks then."

I don't know if I can say that I hated it the most because I knew most of the material before med school, but it was bad because of course design, not really because I don't think that the material was relevant.

My "most hated" goes to gross anatomy. Again, the reason is probably because it wasn't presented well. Anything taught in a 95% rote memory/5% application fashion is going to be a jagged little pill to swallow. I guess I should also add that I have no interest in surgery whatsoever.

The others mentioned...

Embryo and histo are too easy at my school to be hated. Both are crammed the night before the exam. Same goes for the flaky human behavior material and the weak attempt at biostatistics. Neuro is completely professor-dependent but is decent. Phys is also taught by too many people but Costanzo can save the material. Micro--pretty bad, also mostly rote memory (too many teachers). Pathophys and pharm--harder than they need to be, but the interesting nature of the material makes it easier to study.

I guess this thread is about basic science classes, but our M1/2 clinical medicine "class" is 😆

Those were two small sections of classes for which I lived, but I did a lot of both in college. Draw out feedback loops for endocrine. Now the only reason I'm kinda enjoying path is it's endocrine path.
 
biochem ... mostly because of the course design, i like it a lot in undergrad, and learned way more than in med school
 
Any class that gave hard tests requiring rote memorization. Oh, that was everything but our garbage course covering ethics, cultural medicine, etc, and the other course where you learn the physical exam.

Don't get me wrong, I like the material (except bio-chem, that BLOWS!!), but man those tests suck. If this happens, which of the following tertiary signs would you expect.

Gross is a gross waste of time when you look at the boards. Phys was fun, but I was an engineer, and operated a nuclear submarine, so learing about feedback was nothing new.
 
I shudder when I hear the words "neural crest cells." I am still pretty certain I have no idea what those are.
 
i only really hated the ones that ended in -ology or -stry.

I disliked most of them esp. the first year courses. I did love Pathology and Micro/Immuno in second year.

However, my pure unreserved hatred goes out to anatomy (we had embryo and histo rolled into anatomy. I liked histo though) and neuroanatomy.
 
Biochem. If they would only teach what we needed to know to get all the cool clinical stuff I would love this class, but alas it is just mindless memorization.
 
Embryo, but I'm not particularly inspired with neuro at this moment. With physio and biochem (our biochem was a newer program geared towards high levels of medical relevance etc.), I'd find myself thinking of those subjects while running with my dog and just randomly while driving etc. But, I'm just not getting that with neuro at this time. It's a bummer.
 
I hated anatomy and neuro. Anatomy because it's boring, and neuro cause I just didn't understand it.

I love pharm, though!

all first years will say biochem because theyre dumb**** PhDs who do nothing but twiddle their genitalia all day long while getting off on a great immunohistochemical stain in a lab rat. in my book thats bestiality

but wait for second year. and you get pharm. taught by idiot pharmD's who only needed 60's to pass and STILL had a 35+% dropout rate with the bare minimum of pharm knowledge. or you can have the DO who clearly shouldnt have gone to school in the first place and is better suited for teaching at jenny craig or the DO with such an inferiority complex that he makes his lecture incredibly tedious

or maybe theyre all pissed that the general public's number 1 resource for drug info is their doctor. number 2 - internet. number 3 - pharmacologist.

it's probably a slap in the face that they spent so long, four full years is it, learning this nonsense, can't teach it, and don't even have the same trust as the thing i use to score free virtual dates random nights that guarantee a successful date.

yes i'm very very bitter because, you guessed it, i'm studying pharm. clearly the prof's mom was still using her isotretinoin while pregnant.

Anybody else have an issue with some of their biochem being completely re-covered in the endocrine section of physiology?

Oh I don't mind pharm at all. I also like path, biochem, micro. I hate neuro stuff, I'm studying it right now and it's terribly low yield (anat mainly) and high volume. Embryo--hate it. Embryo has the most grotesque pics and 80% of the outcomes are bad or deadly. Most of the subject can be safely ignored with further progress in screening I think, presuming abortion is an option. Lot of ppl don't like histo huh, I love it. So cool how much neat stuff you can see under the scope

Biochem should be absorbed by phsyiology. You learn the biochem when it's relevant to what you're learning in physiology. Then it might actually seem less painfully pointless.
