what can I do to become a good intern....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
relax.. also if you are someone who always thinks they are right, practice changing that. It will grate on the nerves of your attendings as well as the upperclassmen.

You may be smart, you may be good but being difficult to train overshadows those things.

Remember you are there to learn, question why things are done. I had a real interesting deal with this and one of our young attendings.

We had a patellar dislocation, and we were discussing what to do for the girl afterwards, long story short he wasnt practicing EBM cause you cant read all the articles in all the journals. These sorts of things teach them, they earn you respect and show that you are learning when you are off service.

Also, check the ego at the door. No one cares who you are, who your parents are/were, how much money you do or dont have. EM is the blue collar field of medicine. Bring your lunch pail (football reference) and be ready to work.

Now sleepy, im not making assumptions about you.. the above is just a general reference guide.

These types of posts don't usually start, though, until after the match is over. Up until match day the posts are usually how do I figure out my rank list, magic number of interviews, do they like me, why haven't they sent me a letter etc.

during the last couple of months of medical school?

Sorry, I couldn't resist 😉

I think the fact that you are asking will probably make you at least a little more motivated.

I think as an intern as long as you act like you are there to learn, take other peoples advice, and work hard, you will be fine. Its great if you know a lot, but if you know a lot and show off that will look bad, if you know a lot and are humble, thats better.

One thing is you will find attendings are different in every respect, some are big on doing the appropriate tests, some dont care about that, they care more about your presentation skills...and so on. So that will take a few months to figure out anyways.

Another thing is every attending has a different way of doctoring, you may not agree with it, but you should try to learn from them anything you can, because in the end, you should compile different ways of being a doctor from different doctors and then tailor it towards the way you want to practice. So what I mean is dont' discredit any one elses way of practicing, just because its not what you agree with.

Work hard, study, and be nice.
