Hi, I'm trying to build up my vitae for Psy D. programs and was wondering what else I should do??? I have two yrs of research in two different labs and about a yr of shadowing a counselor at a mental illness/mental ******ation center. I recently graduated and moved back home. Therefore, I cannot continue shadowing that counselor. I've called hospitals around my area to volunteer on the psychiatric unit but they don't take volunteers! So, I was wondering if I should continue to do research (even though Psy D. programs are more practice oriented)?

Definitely continue to do research; even PsyD programs value it.

Suggestions for places to look for clinical experience:

-Crisis hotlines
-Therapeutic schools for children with autism, behavioral disorders, etc.
-Group transitional homes

How do you shadow a counselor? Doesn't that create confidentiality issues?

Ok thanks! I'm actually also having a hard time finding research labs that coincides with my interest...Is any type of research better than none? There are a few more uni/colleges I'm going to look into. So, hopeful they have something!

Well, I signed a confidentiality form and I basically sat in on the sessions. The clients were first asked if it was ok and the counselor mainly just gave them measurements for anger, depression etc.
