What can I exactly do with a Masters? So lost! Please help. :(

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A masters is a graduate program.

1. Yes, generally speaking. Some clinical psych masters programs have the option of either doing either an empirical masters thesis or more extended practicum though.

2. Depends on the state. Masters in clinical or counseling can often be licensed as Mental Health Counselors or some variation of that title that allows you to see patients for psychotherapy. Some state require that you are supervised, some not. Third-party reimbursement for services is not as high for masters level folks though

3. Clinical health psychologists work specifically (sometimes exclusively) with medical patients. The focus is on changing maladaptive behaviors that are effecting the person's physical health. They also deal with the mental health issues that are commonly seen in chronic medical patients, terminally ill patients, etc.

4. Other options are masters programs in other similar fields. Frankly, they will result in similar jobs as a masters in clinical psych. The focus and nature of training will be different though in an MFT or MSW program.

5. There is mo such thing as a Masters BA or Masters BS. The "B" stands for bachelors degree. Its just a BA or BS. The masters degree also comes in art or science (eg., MS or MA). There is no real appreciable difference between the two outside of academia.

It depends on what you want to do. If therapy is your goal (and I'm assuming it is) then you have master's programs in counseling, counseling psychology, clinical psychology, clinical social work, and marriage and family therapy. You also need to consider whether or not practicing as an independent practitioner is important to you. In some states, including mine, counselors cannot practice independently without supervision. The only practitioners that can practice independently with a masters in my area are clinical social workers. I cannot speak for everywhere else, but friends i know who have counseling master's degrees tell me that they have to always practice under supervision and can never practice independently. If you do not want to go to grad school, you will have to pursue something else. You cannot practice psychology or mental health counseling without graduate training.
