Well folks, another Fall semester is upon us. How many of you are applying to pharm school this next cycle? What classes are you taking in the meanwhile?

I'll start:

Microbiology
Statistics
Macro-economics
Government I
World Literature

Notice the lack of O-chem? It was totally worth getting both semesters knocked out over the summer. It was like getting a root canal, but it's finally over. 😀

Analytical Chemistry (don't want to take it but I have no choice)
Phys & Anal Chem Lab (don't want to take it but I have no choice)
A & P I
Race & Power In U.S.

(at a state college)

Microbiology
Physics (if the class opens up)

(for MBA)

Intro to Marketing (pre-requisite I don't have because I was a science major)
Delivering Superior Costumer Value
Managing Human Resources
(maybe) 21st Century Management Practices

yayyy. lol

No offense, but I'm so glad I'm not you. Analytical Chem is a nightmare.

I'm taking econ, public speech, and anat/phys 2.

I heard it's very hard too. I really do not want to take it now just in case I don't get in Pharmacy this year, Analytical can bring my GPA down....My school offer this class in the Fall only, if I miss this year I have to wait for another year. So I guess I have to take it.
Hopefully I can get in somewhere before the withdraw period and I will be all set lolz.

I am a bit nervous about my schedule, but I want to show pharmacy schools that I can handle a tough schedule (especially after a not-so-great freshman year).

Orgo 1
Analytical w/ lab (at my school, analytical and orgo labs are combined into one)
Microbiology w/lab
Biopsychology
Literary arts course (Popular Genres)

Good luck! Are you balancing a heavy work load with your coursework?

No... my current job will end once I go back to school. As part of my financial aid package, I am supposed to do a work-study job. I would work anywhere from 10 to 15 hours a week. I have chosen three jobs to apply to, all of which are within the School of Pharmacy at my school... if I do not get any of the three, I am not going to work at all. I do need money and I think working for the School of Pharmacy may look good for adcoms, but I may have to sacrifice that to get good grades.

Orgo 1
A&P 1
Intro to Sociology
Eng Rhet 1
Calc 1

I'm planning to take the PCAT next summer with the intention of applying for 2011.

One of pharmacy schools told me last year that they don't like applicants who are missing alot of science classes especially Organic even though their GPA are high. I was missing Organic 2, Biology 2, Microbiology and Physics at that time and I have to hold my plan until this year. Every school is different, we never know.

I believe less courses in progress, is assocaited with more chance of luck, some people don't ageree.

I have 3 courses in Fall 2009:
Ochem B, Macroecon, English compI

and 5 courses for spring:

Public speakning, Calculus II, physics II, English compII

Any of schools need some of prequisite from this list. For example, while UCSF needs all, Loma linda school needs only 3 of this seven courses.

Do you think so many courses in progress would be a barrier for acceptance?

Application of Statistics for Pharmacists
Biochemistry
Anatomy and Physiology
Longitudinal Patient Care Experience
Fundamentals of Pharmacy Practice

NOTHING. Oh it feels good.

I doubt it... Pharmacy schools understand that they're going to have a lot of students w/ a lot of IPs. I mean, they pretty much go into it knowing they'll accept coursework completed in the Fall and Spring (and SOMETIMES summer, depending on circumstances) leading up to matriculation, so your IPs will be just fine, IMO.

The only "real important" class I see on your list of IP is Orgo II, and maybe Calculus (Physics, as a I understand, is just a "weed out" class type deal). With the breadth of your pre-requisites under your belt I think you'll be fine.

I take it you're already in Pharmacy School, then? 😛

Human Anatomy and Physiology I / lab
Physics I / lab
Intro to Sociology
Rise of Civilization (anthropology)

and maybe throw in some hamster behavioral research. 🙂

Pre-Calc
Gen. Chem+lab
Macroeconomics
Eng. Comp. 1
First year exp.(required class)

I'm thinking about adding one more class to my sched. since i'm not working this semester. Any suggestions?

Are you a freshman? Since you are not working then I would suggest Gen. Bio I w/ lab.

yes i am. I would have taken Gen. Bio. but my school filled up the slots for Bio. the first orientation. I'm hoping it opens up but i doubt it will because there is around 40 people waitlisted for the class.

Are there any schools around you where you could take it? Pharmacy pre-reqs include two years of chem and bio. If you skip Bio I now, you're guaranteeing yourself some time in summer school (not that that's a bad thing).

And it sucks when classes fill up early! My college only offers ONE microbiology course. A year.

I registered for it back in May and it was full by a week into June.

Yeh I'm going to have to check with the local CC's. Worst comes to worst i'll have to take it with orgo I in the summer. Which shouldn't be too bad since i love science, even though i hear orgo is a pain lol.

Fall semester:

-Analytical chem lab (took the class in the spring and decided to wait on the lab till now since I had 3 other labs last spring)
-Physical chemistry (class and lab)
-Inorganic chemistry (class only)
-Social psychology (random elective that sounded interesting and fit my schedule)

This should actually be better than last semester when I had had three labs and my classes were: orgo II, cell bio, physics II (calc based), and analytical chem. I also worked full time and my commute to school each day is 70 minutes each way.... I sure hope that semester shows admissions I can handle pharm school 🙄

biochem 464
physics 100A /lab
biology 106 /lab
philosophy 150

all at Cal State Northridge

Advanced Inorganic Chemistry
Statistics
Genetics
Historic Lives (GE)

Wooo! I am at my last year of Biochemistry B.S. in UCSB

Anatomy w/ Lab (2 3hr labs a week!!!!!!!!!!!)
Ecology w/ Lab
Poli Sci
Maybe a PE class

You can only take Orgo I once you have successfully completed a full year of Gen. Chemistry. I personally would not suggest taking an advanced chemistry course in the summer unless you can absorb all that material within a 4-8 week period. Some folks have had success doing this in the summer so I guess it depends on the individual.

Taking...

Org ChemI, Statistics, and Bio1B

My schedule would look uglier, but I decided not to take anatomy and physiology since here its split into 3 classes AND you need to take a worthless prereq class for it.

Flippin the bird to all the pharmacy schools that need anatomy and physiology!

Hey if I had to take it, then so do you! 😛

Organic Chemistry I
Principals of Biology
College Writing

Easy schedule, but I'll be working as a tech also.

It's a beast! But it's doable. The high point of taking O-Chem over the summer is I was allowed to concentrate on nothing but that class. I also signed up for the August PCAT, so all of my O-Chem is still very fresh in my mind.

I think it's a pretty good path to take, if you've got the time.

Year two at a junior college:

- Bio I w/lab
- Literature
- Trigonometry
- Government I
- History II

Total: 16 hours

I'm a bit nervous about the upcoming semester; I'm finally starting my sciences. I want to get the bulk of my prerequisites out of the way before I transfer though.

Any idea when you'll start throwing in your Chemistry? You have 4 semesters of it to get through.
I planned on taking Chem I in the spring with Bio II. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun, but I have no other choice. I'll take Chem II in the summer, so that way I can start on my Organics when I transfer to UH. Hopefully, that's how it will work out, haha.

We'll see how everything works out here on the boards, I'm sure.

To be honest, taking Chem I then is completely doable. THREE gen ed classes? That's way too many. If you can only handle one science class at a time, you aren't going to be ready for pharmacy school.

Ok. I just couldn't see myself taking a class like that in the summer. So you taking the PCAT on saturday huh? Good luck my brotha and wish nothing but the best for you. 👍

Why, thank you! Yes, indeed.

I was going to take Chem I during the fall, but I couldn't find fit it into my schedule. Personally, I'm quite certain I'll be able to take multiple sciences at the same time since I had to juggle a lot during homeschooling.
Three is a load, but I want to get them done when I'm already attending a junior college. I'll still have a few left over to complete when I transfer.

Since this is my last year😀, I'm taking:
Ochem II
Bioethics
Humanities
English 3

Good Luck all!!🙂

So I gather that you will be applying with the 2010 batch right?

Idk yet, I need to retake the Pcat and TOEFL, and i don't think i'm gonna have time to study, and get ready. Plus I don't have any pharmacy experience, and would like to raise my gpa!! 🙁

Ok. I thought your post said this was your last year so I assumed your were applying for next fall. Try and see if you can get some volunteering experience and that should be beneficial.

Thank you, I've been thinking about it...! I'll be checking next week in a few pharmacies..! I was thinking, to apply for this year, but i think i can wait, UF is my top option so I REALLY want to have good stats.

Ok. Well, just remain focused. I started volunteering earlier this month at one hospital but I am going to start volunteering at another one soon. Hopefully, after doing the PCAT I can take the PTCB test the next month and move on from there.

I wish I could, but where I live, the government requires the pharmacy tech from a program, and an X hrs of practice. So I need to wait until my graduation to moved to Florida, then try to get a job as pharm tech, and the PTCB from Florida. It's a big mess!!!!!:scared:

Well thank God for good ole Texas. The laws here are a lot different in regards to that.

haha yeah. Here, we let anyone push our pills.

Because they know if they screw up we'll shoot 'em. 😀

Also, consider doing volunteer work in other venues (if you can't get into a hospital right away). Part of volunteering is doing it for the sake of doing it, and not necessarily with the end goal of pharm school on your mind.

hahahahahaha, so funny!!!

I got volunteer experience, with Make-a-wish foundation a couple of years ago🙂, and I work as a math/science tutor for high school kids!

Fall classes:
Organic chem 1 w/lab
Gen Bio 1 w/lab
Advanced composition

11 credits, also will be working full time
