So, I'm a pre-med student right now at an ivy league (going to be a sophomore) and I wanted to know what exactly URM is. I'm full Peruvian, my parents are both from there and I have dual citizenship in Peru, and my friend (who's also pre-med) told me that I'm a URM. I looked at a few threads but I don't really know what is is. Is it JUST based on race/ethnicity? Because my parents have an okay income (700k), my dad is a pediatrician and my mom manages his pediatric office. So would that cancel my URM status? When you apply to medical school, do you report income and what your parent's occupations are?
My friend told me I would have a hard time getting into medical school because of it so I'm really worried because it's hard enough for me anyway competing at this school with brilliant people....

I also have a question.. do medical schools frown down upon working at your parent's clinic? I was asking because I'm going to Peru (Cusco specifically) and I am volunteering at a clinic and get to work in the triage (actual clinical experience, yay!) and Im leaving in like 4 and a half weeks. In those 4 and a half weeks I was just going to work at my parent's office (I'm also volunteering at a hospital and shadowing other doctors) , but does it look bad? Thanks so much and sorry for this long post...

700k is an "okay" income 😱

You would be considered an URM, and yes you do need to report family history/income. As far as working at your fam's clinic, I dont think it would be looked down on at all, as long as you keep the rest of your application well rounded with other volunteering, shadowing, and ECs as you stated. I think it could be a great asset.

I'm assuming you identify as an Hispanic? Then yes, I would say you are urm. Cornell is a tough/competetive school. Some would even say it is a very grade deflated school. Good Luck.

"okay income"? Come on. It's okay to own up to your privilege.

+1, I was thinking the same thing. Keep in mind that your Hispanic urm may not be enough to offset a low GPA since you're obviously not disadvantaged. Since you mentioned your difficulty with competition from other brilliant students, how's your GPA up to this point?
