What courses do you guys study in groups for?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I dont study in a group for any of my classes. I feel like my time is spent more effeciently solo.

Study groups aren't extremely effective or so I found. Then again studying by myself isn't working too well right now. The more people in one room trying to study equals the greater possibility of derailing the study session and doing something else. Unless you're going to be studying with "gunners" you're more than likely going to get derailed atleast a little bit. Find a few people that are having the same troubles as you and work as a team to figure out what to do to correct the situation. Help each other out. Overall, my take home message is, You have to look at who is getting invited to the session.

All of them.

I study alone first.
Then with a group. If the class is easy for me, I find that teaching other cements it in my head.
If the class is a rough one, then I find that if I surround myself with smart people I will eventually get it too.
I also hand pick my people I study with.

Different strokes...

Study groups proved to be ineffective for me. I did one for Orgo1 and towards the end I felt like a tutor and got little benefit from my study buddy except for I had to explain stuff and that was good review. Make sure that people you are studying with are competent.

I study better in groups and rarely study alone. It's all dependent on your personal learning style. I have a photographic memory and can remember all information given in lecture or from a book after reading it quickly, but group study helps me understand the concepts and processes behind the data rather than just knowing the information. This method of study helps me understand how things work and why, rather than a conglomeration of facts.

MUST BE NICE!!! 😛

I try to avoid studying in groups, because when you study in group most of the time is spent tending to the needs of the one who knows the least. Kind of like the analogy "you are only as strong as your weakest link"

Pointless in math.

Study groups are only effective AFTER you've done some solo studying (and other people in your group have too). It serves to flesh out what you each person doesn't already know.

I agree with TheRealMD...if you have to do group studying make sure that you go over the material yourself first. Or you'll find that the people in the group who do not do anything slows the whole group down. That is what happened when I had a calc study group. After that I don't do study groups anymore. I find it better if I study alone. If I get a concept down then I can just move on... but that is just me, everyone is different.
